This 2003 Mercedes-Benz (R230) SL500 has a meticulous maintenance history and presents in remarkable condition for its age. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine which develops 225kW and 460Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed sports automatic transmission. This car’s odometer currently shows 100,063km. The R230-generation Mercedes-Benz SL traces its roots back to the original 300SL Gullwing and shares its sports-touring intent. But, while still being comfortable for long-distance touring and complete with stunning swoopy looks, the model was far more technologically advanced than its forebear and far more dynamic. It also featured the first metal folding hard-top roof for Mercedes-Benz and used lightweight aluminium componentry to ensure it was as dynamic as possible.

It is renowned as one of the best-generation SLs to pair sporty driving characteristics with its legendary luxurious nature. While not the flagship SL variant – that was reserved for the SL600 and its V12 – the SL500 features a powerful V8 engine that propels the model from zero to 100km/h in 6.3 seconds. The R230-generation Mercedes-Benz SL is now a great value purchase on the used market. Painted in Zircon Silver, this SL500 pairs a black leather-upholstered cabin for an all-round appealing colour combination. There are no aftermarket modifications, and this car presents in as-delivered specification. However, it does specify a set of period-correct 19-inch Brabus alloy wheels.

These are wrapped in Kumho Ecsta tyres. This car was manufactured in November 2002 and delivered new to Australia in February 2003. It was sold to its first owner based in the Gold Coast and it is now a four-owner car. The current owner purchased the vehicle in 2021 and has had it serviced through Mercedes-Benz Melbourne and independent Sharp Performance. The last service was done at Sharp Performance in February 2024. Other recent maintenance included an air-conditioning re-gas and SBC hydraulic pump replacement. The current owner describes a full mechanical overhaul completed throughout his ownership.

Outside, this SL500 presents in fantastic condition. The ceramic-coated silver paintwork shows no marks of dents or damage, while the finish itself reflects light nicely. The owner notes minor stone chip damage on the front end and there are scuff scratches on the lower front bar. Small stone chip repairs are seen in the windscreen and touch-ups on the bonnet. Wheels present in good condition on the left-hand side, though kerb rash is noted on the right-hand-side wheels. Inside the cabin this Mercedes-Benz has been fastidiously maintained. The black leather seats show no marks of indentation or stains but there is some light scuffing on the driver’s seat base and bolstering.

Volume and power knobs show some subtle wear, though the dashboard displays in brilliant condition otherwise. The car’s many electric systems all operate as intended. The owner notes the boot soft-close function has stopped operating – but still closes as normal. All accompanying documentation, a first aid kit, a Nokia car phone, a CTEK trickle charger, and two factory keys will be supplied with this sale.
