This 2002 Ducati 998R is a limited edition super sports bike which has stood as part of a large bike collection. It features tasteful – but reversible – modifications for a tidy OEM+ specification. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated and fuel-injected 999cc four-stroke engine which develops 92kW (123hp). This power is sent through a six-speed transmission through a single-sided swingarm. The odometer of this bike shows 26,705km. Italian motorbike manufacturer Ducati released the 998 super sports bike in 2002 to replace the earlier 996.

It was in production for two years before being replaced by the 999. Key for the 998 was the Testastretta engine which shared much its design with the previous Desmoquattro in the 996, but was actually new from the crankshaft up. The 998R version was a road-going homologation special which benefitted from a second-generation Testastretta engine. The narrow-head design was critical for increased efficiency but also allowed the 998R to achieve higher revs. This special engine was bolted to Ducati’s trademark steel-tube trellis chassis which offers incredible rigidity without compromising on weight.

Of course, the 998R features the iconic single-sided swingarm design which is a notable Ducati design highlight of the era. This sports bike is painted Ducati Red over the fairings and tank, while the rear of the bike is painted white. Carbon trim can be seen through Ducati stickers on the fairings and the bike features a black-upholstered single seat. Over a regular 998R this bike features aftermarket modifications such as a race-style quick-change rear sprocket, steel side stand, and a quick-release fuel cap. It also features carbon-fibre trims around the chain guard, clutch cover, and swingarm protector.

It rides on a set of 17-inch five-spoke gold wheels (Marchesini forged aluminium) which are wrapped in Metzeler tyres. Manufactured in the Ducati factory and delivered new to Japan, this superbike is example number 31 of 700. The current owner purchased the bike out of Japan in late 2022 to have as part of a large collection. It has reportedly been serviced and road-tested in preparation for sale – no faults or defects are present. The bike’s physical condition is presented to a high standard.

The red paintwork shows no issues in the light and the bodywork contains no dents or scuffs. Some light chips are seen around the left-side mirror base and minor stone chipping is seen at the front. Carbon fibre accents display in good order, while the seat retains its original shape. This bike will come with all accompanying documentation.
