This 1998 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type R Coupe is a purpose-built track and tarmac rally car based on the highly sought-after GC8 platform. It shows an indicated 37,298 km and has been owned by the current custodian for at least five years. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-litre EJ20 flat-four engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission and Subaru’s DCCD all-wheel-drive system.
The Version 3 STi Type R was Subaru’s lightweight, two-door homologation-inspired coupe, developed to be stiffer and more focused than the standard STi sedan. With reduced weight, reinforced structure, and rally-derived engineering, the Type R has long been regarded as one of the purest driver-focused Imprezas ever produced. This example builds on that foundation and has been developed into a serious competition-focused car.
The engine package has been built and serviced by Alec from Got It Rex and features a Blouch Dominator 1.5 XTR turbocharger with 7cm housing, external wastegate, headers, Process West front-mount intercooler, surge tank, and a Link ECU with supporting sensors. The car is tuned to run on E85 with flex-fuel capability and produces approximately 300 kW at the wheels, with the option to convert to 98-octane fuel if required. A MoTeC C127 digital dash and data logger provides comprehensive engine and performance monitoring.
Drivetrain upgrades include a six-speed DCCD gearbox and a Cusco R180 rear differential. Braking is handled by Brembo calipers sourced from a later GDB STi, offering strong and consistent stopping performance suited to track use. A 5x114.3 hub conversion has also been carried out to support the wider wheel and tyre setup.
Chassis and suspension modifications are extensive and clearly reflect the car’s intended purpose. It is fitted with Shockworks track-spec coilovers and ABW widebody guard flares, allowing for a significantly wider stance. Enkei RPF1 wheels, custom painted in STi gold, are wrapped in 295-width Yokohama A050 semi-slick tyres, delivering a substantial increase in mechanical grip.
Inside, the cabin has been stripped and configured for competition use, featuring a full weld-in Trackart National Rally cage, fixed-back Sparco bucket seats, and a motorsport steering wheel. The interior layout prioritises driver focus, safety, and data visibility, aligning with the car’s track and tarmac rally intent.
This STi Type R Coupe is not presented as a road car, but as a dedicated performance machine built on one of Subaru’s most iconic platforms. It represents a rare opportunity to acquire a properly developed GC8 Type R with modern power, proven hardware, and a specification suited to circuit work, time attack, or tarmac rally competition.
