This 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL280 (R129) is a documented Australian-delivered example presented in silver over a black leather interior. Powered by a naturally aspirated 2.8 litre 142kW (190hp) inline six-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission, the odometer currently displays 113,234km.
The R129 SL was produced from 1989 to 2001 and is widely regarded as one of the finest open-topped grand tourers of the modern era, combining classic proportions with a sophisticated multi-link suspension system, an automatic rollover protection bar, and a fully electric hood. The SL280 was positioned as the entry-level variant of the range in this period, offering the same fundamental chassis and engineering quality as its larger-engined siblings in a more accessible configuration. Designed under Bruno Sacco, the R129 has aged exceptionally well and well-maintained examples are appreciating steadily.
This example is finished in silver with a black leather interior trimmed with burr walnut inlays and 16-inch Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels. The car is presented in completely original specification, with the front bar, rear bar, and Bruno Sacco lower panels having been professionally repainted according to the seller.
The car was supplied new through Mercedes-Benz of Sydney and first registered in January 1996. The original service book was replaced by DaimlerChrysler Australia on 24 February 2005 at 87,360km. The replacement book contains entries transcribed from the original, covering the initial inspection at 5,369km in January 1997 through to the 90,000km service carried out by Central Star Automotive of Bowen Hills, Queensland in April 2005 at 93,288km, with all earlier services completed by Mercedes-Benz of Sydney. The seller advises subsequent servicing has been carried out by Bundy Classic Cars, a Mercedes-Benz independent specialist. The current owner is the third owner and has held the car for approximately four years.
The seller advises the car has recently undergone a comprehensive service including a transmission service, oil and filter change, fuel filter replacement, fuel tank clean, differential fluid replacement, new brakes all round, new shock absorbers all round, top strut mounts, and several suspension bushes. The seller also advises the convertible roof system has been fully reconditioned including all twelve hydraulic rams within the last four weeks, and that a reconditioned original antenna with new mast has been fitted. The seller reports the exterior presents at approximately 8.5 out of 10, with some fade on the bonnet and light surface scratches. The interior is described by the seller as presenting well, with the exception of the left front seat base leather having separated from its stitching in several places, noting that carpets are in excellent condition and all electronics are functional. A broken interior light tab and a cracked interior mirror housing are also noted by the seller. The sale includes two keys, the owner's manual and service books, spare wheel, and toolkit.
