This 1995 BMW (E31) 840Ci is one of only 54 ever fitted with a manual transmission. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre V8 engine which sends 210kW (286hp) to the rear wheels. The transmission in this car is a six-speed manual. The odometer currently shows 139,906 miles. The BMW E31 is the first generation of the BMW 8 Series – the German brand’s flagship executive coupe designed for grand touring. Following on from the earlier E24 6 Series, the E31 8 Series was priced substantially more expensive and exhibited a wider performance envelope.

A curiously-long development phase for the 8 Series allowed the car-maker to use CAD tools, unusual at the time, to design the car’s body to aerodynamic perfection. The signature styling highlight was its pillar-less windows, as well as the iconic pop-up headlights. The 8 Series was launched during a difficult global period, at the same time as rising oil prices and the Persian Gulf War, which meant its large V12 and V8 engines were expensive to refuel and maintain. As a result, sales were lacklustre. However, this means that the unique model is in short supply today, sure to become a collector’s item in the future. Finished in Orient Blue over an Ultramarine nappa leather-upholstered interior, this blue-on-blue specification is sophisticated.

The car has stayed largely original from delivery and retains its original colour combination. Standard features fitted to the car include a sunroof, electric rear sun blind, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, and electric seats with memory function. The car sits on a set of 18-inch BMW alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. This E31 was manufactured in Munich, Germany and delivered through Benham BMW (United Kingdom) in November 1995. It was imported to Australia in January 2021. The car is reportedly build number 51 of 54 total 840Cis fitted with a manual gearbox.

Early servicing was completed through the official BMW network, though later maintenance has been performed by independents. The most recent maintenance was completed by Arnpro Automotive in December 2022. Servicing completed throughout 2022 included repairs to the suspension, replacement of worn parts for the gear linkages, replaced clutch slave cylinder, replaced power steering hose, and a new air filter. The seller notes the car’s engine block and pistons were replaced under warranty at 62,000 miles, though the car retains its original engine number. External condition is presented to a high standard. The Orient Blue paintwork shows no obvious swirl marking or holograms, while the finish reflects nicely in the sunlight.

There are some light stone chips noted around the front end, and the door handles have light scratch marks as expected with use. The front bumper and the side skirts have been repainted. All wheels retain a strong shine with no marks of kerb rash. Inside the cabin this E31 presents in good order. There is fair creasing to the blue leather upholstery but there are no obvious marks or imperfections seen in the dashboard and door panels. No stains are noted in the carpeting and minimal wear and tear is identified on instrumentation and controls.
