This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL is a well-maintained example of the flagship R129-generation roadster, showing 77,094 km on its odometer. It is powered by a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, driving the rear wheels.

The R129 generation marked a new era for Mercedes-Benz when introduced in 1989, blending advanced engineering with understated luxury. Featuring an electronically operated soft top, an automatically deploying roll bar, and multilink rear suspension, the 500SL offered effortless performance and refinement, becoming one of the most accomplished grand tourers of its time.

This example was imported from Japan and purchased through Motorman Imports in Brisbane on 11 January 2023, at which time it showed 72,000 km. It is believed to have had one or two owners prior to import. Following purchase, the car was stored until May 2024, when it was re-registered in Western Australia. Upon re-commissioning, the current owner elected to complete a full round of servicing and preventative maintenance to bring the car to a high mechanical standard.

Work undertaken between 2024 and 2025 includes a full service with all filters replaced, new spark plugs, distributor caps, rotors, and a replacement fuel pump, accumulator, and fuel filter. Further refurbishment included reconditioning the steering box, power steering pump, and wiper motor gearbox, along with replacement of the control arm ball joints, radiator hoses, and fitment of a new OEM radiator. Cosmetic updates included full restoration of the interior wood trim, a reconditioned left window motor, a new mirror control switch, and installation of a Blaupunkt radio. The car has also received a bonnet repaint to rectify a small area of clear coat failure.

In total, the car has travelled just 5,000 km since purchase and has been recently serviced at 77,000 km. Mechanical work on the steering and suspension was undertaken by The Star Shop in Osborne Park, with the remainder of the servicing handled by Auto Exclusive. Mechanically, the 500SL is reported to be in very good condition with no known faults. The 5.0-litre V8 delivers smooth, consistent power, and the car drives with the composure and solidity expected from the model.

The exterior presents very well, with the paintwork showing a strong, glossy finish. The body panels are straight, and all wheels are in good order, including the matching full-size spare mounted on a factory eight-hole alloy. The original tool roll is stored in the boot alongside the spare wheel.

Inside, the cabin remains in good overall condition. The seats and trims present neatly with only minor imperfections, including a small nick in the roll bar trim and a slight irregularity in the passenger seat stitching. The restored wood trim is in excellent order, and both the soft top and hard top trims are clean and functional.

Known faults are limited to a non-functional infrared remote key (central locking still operates via the key) and slightly erratic operation of the side mirror remote adjustment.

The car will be supplied with manuals in both Japanese and English, as well as all supporting receipts for the recent work undertaken.
