This 1988 HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw is a low-kilometre Aussie icon complete with original documentation. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine putting out 180kW and 380Nm. This power is fed to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer of this car currently displays 16,348km which is believed to be genuine by the seller. The 1988 Holden Special Vehicles VL SS Group A ‘Walkinshaw’ was a limited-run homologation special, the first model released by Tom Walkinshaw Racing’s HSV outfit. It was designed to run in Group A, which mandated an engine size no larger than 5.0 litres, and 500 examples were originally designated for public consumption.

However, HSV had to expand its production run to 750 cars to satiate demand for the unique model. The special-design body kit is arguably the most interesting aspect, said to reduce drag by 25 per cent compared to the 1987 Holden Dealer Team SS Group A Commodore. The 5.0-litre V8 was Holden’s first fuel-injected motor and incorporated twin throttle-body intakes for better breathing. This pushed the motor higher in the engine bay forcing HSV to create a large ‘power bulge’ in the bonnet. Today, the VL SS Group A Walkinshaw is widely tipped to become a blue-chip investment piece – especially low-kilometre examples like this one. This VL Walkinshaw is painted in Panorama Silver and specifies a grey cloth interior – the only colour combination available for the model.

The seller states there are no aftermarket modifications made to this car. It remains in original condition aside from the 20-inch alloy wheels the car currently sits on. These are fitted with Nankang tyres. A set of original 16-inch wheels are also included. Manufactured by HSV in April 1988, this VL Walkinshaw is numbered 472 out of 750 total examples and was delivered by Penfold Holden in Burwood, VIC. The current owner has held the vehicle since 2020. The car has sat in storage for an extended period.

Three roadworthy certificates have been issued in the last six years. The car is said to have no mechanical issues. Given such low mileage, this VL Walkinshaw shows in great condition externally. The Panorama Silver paintwork gleans beautifully in the light and no obvious marks of paint imperfection are seen. However, the lower front bumper displays cracks and scratch damage on the left- and right-hand sides. A small paint imperfection is noted above the left-front wheel. Light kerb rash can be seen on some of the chrome wheel rims.

Inside the cabin this car appears in untouched condition. The grey cloth upholstery shows no stains or tears, while the bolsters contain no obvious sagging. Similarly, the carpeting and floor mats show no scuffs. The three-spoke Momo steering wheel appears in good order and dash instrumentation contains no wear and tear. This car will come with original owners manuals, but unfortunately, no servicing stamps are present. The vehicle will also come with its factory set of wheels. As per Trading Garage terms and conditions, although Trading Garage has completed the following checks bidders must satisfy themselves to the accuracy of the description and do any research they feel necessary before bidding.
