This 1984 BMW (E28) 528i is an Australian-delivered car which presents in clean and honest condition. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.8-litre inline-six-cylinder engine producing 135kW and 240Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer of this car currently shows 299,311km. BMW’s second-generation 5 Series was a luxurious executive sedan with seating for five and a sporting ability that continues to stand the test of time. Produced by BMW from 1981 until 1988, the E28 5 Series is powered by a range of BMW’s renowned inline-six engines, as well as a 1.

8-litre four-cylinder and a 2.4-litre diesel. The six-cylinder cars are undoubtedly the most popular and the 528i was the most powerful at the model’s launch, however it was overtaken by the 535i after 1984. The legendary E28 M5 takes the cake for the most iconic variant of the E28 generation, though it was not sold in Australia. For this reason, high-specification E28s like the 528i are the next-best thing and are currently enjoying a resurgence on the used car market. The E28’s iconic “sharknose” styling is also a major factor of this car’s ongoing popularity.

This car is painted in period-perfect burgundy-over-beige. The paint is metallic, while the interior is beige cloth. There are no notable aftermarket modifications showing on this car aside from a Pioneer head unit in place of the original. The car rides on a set of period correct 15-inch Style 5 ‘Basketweave’ wheels wrapped in Mayrun/Kinforest tyres. Manufactured by BMW for the Australian market and delivered new through Bryson BMW on May 2, 1985 in Melbourne, this 528i shows a consistent service history throughout its 40-year life. The current owner purchased this car to add to their BMW collection in 2019.

It has been used regularly since, and could even be driven interstate according to the seller. Maintenance has been completed between official BMW outlets and independent service centres. The exterior presentation of this E28 shows in decent order throughout. The Burgundy Red metallic paint holds nice reflections in the sunlight and no obvious issues are seen. However, there are smaller points of damage around the car. These include a scuff on the rear-right wheel guard, chips around the fuel filler, paint bubbling above the left tail-light, paint scratches beneath the rear bumper plastic, fade marks around the rear number plate, and weathered plastic of the side mirrors.

Wheels appear in fair order for their age, but some minor kerb rash is identified. Inside the cabin this car presents in good order, considering its odometer and age. The beige fabric pulls taut over the seat cushion, though stains and discolouration is seen on the driver’s side. No obvious cracks are seen in the dashboard, a common issue for E28 BMWs, and its instrumentation displays without major wear. Marks and scuffs are seen around grab handles and the seat backs, while the door card fabric inserts could use a clean. This car’s carpeting and headlining shows in good order.
