This 1981 Chevrolet El Camino is a three-owner example that presents very well following a light restoration carried out during a previous ownership, and benefits from a spirited V8 engine upgrade. It is powered by a 350 cubic inch (5.7-litre) Chevrolet small block V8, fitted with an Edelbrock double-pump carburettor and Corsa exhaust system with remote control operation. Power is sent to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission. The odometer currently reads 76,791 miles, listed as TMU.
The El Camino occupies a unique place in American automotive culture. Chevrolet's answer to the car-based utility segment, it combined the comfort and styling of a passenger car with the practicality of a pickup bed, appealing equally to those who wanted style and those who needed to haul. The fifth-generation El Camino, produced from 1978 through to 1987, wore the squared-off lines of the G-body platform shared with the Monte Carlo and Malibu, giving it a purposeful, muscular stance that has aged particularly well. Today, clean examples are increasingly sought after by American iron enthusiasts worldwide, with the small block V8 conversion being one of the most popular and desirable upgrades fitted to these cars.
This El Camino is finished in gloss black and presents in very clean condition throughout. The interior features grey cloth upholstery on the bench seat, grey carpets, a black dashboard with Chevrolet badging, and an aftermarket steering wheel. A replacement head unit has been fitted to the centre console area. Air conditioning is present and operational. The dashboard carries age-related cracking, which is covered by a custom-fitted dash mat. The car rides on a set of steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and BFGoodrich Radial T/A tyres.
Originally from the United States, this El Camino was imported to the United Arab Emirates where the most recent restoration work was carried out under a local Emirati owner. Work included a fresh respray in the current gloss black, new upholstery, and replacement of trim rubbers where required. The V8 engine conversion was also completed during this time, with the original V6 replaced by the 350 small block unit currently fitted. The car was subsequently imported to Australia and has been in its current ownership for approximately one year. A new battery has been fitted during the current ownership and the relevant compliance paperwork and modification plate are available with the car.
The black paintwork presents in very clean condition with only minor cosmetic wear consistent with the car's age. No significant stone chips, scratches, or dents are identified. All four steel wheels present without damage. The grey upholstery and carpets present in good order. Air conditioning, electric windows, and the remote-controlled exhaust system are all operational. An intermittent fault is noted with the combination stalk, which can affect wiper operation on occasion.
This El Camino will be supplied with keys, the exhaust remote control, a receipt for the recently fitted battery, two spare rear tyres, compliance paperwork, and the modification plate.
