This 1978 Holden Monaro HZ GTS is finished in Atlantis Blue with a vinyl and cloth interior. Power comes from a 5.0-litre V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 341,973 km*.
The HZ GTS was the last of the Monaro line in the 1970s, produced at a time when Holden’s flagship coupe evolved into a sedan format. Distinctive styling, GTS badging and a sports dash ensured the car retained its muscle-car character, while the 5.0-litre V8 delivered strong performance. Today, the HZ GTS is recognised as a significant model in Holden’s performance history and remains highly sought after by collectors.
This example has had just two owners from new. The current custodian purchased it in 2005 from the first owner, having admired the car for years when it was a neighbour’s pride and joy. The seller is a mechanic by trade and has looked after the Monaro for the past 20 years, with regular servicing and careful upkeep.
The engine was fully rebuilt by the previous owner at around 300,000 km, at which time a towing cam was fitted to support caravan duties in retirement. The clutch was replaced and the flywheel machined at the same time. In the current ownership, servicing has been carried out every 5,000 km or annually. The last service was completed 4,500 km ago, while more significant work includes a timing case and water pump replacement around 3,000 km ago and a gearbox rebuild approximately 40,000 km ago. The seller notes the car would benefit from a rear axle and LSD rebuild.
The exterior presents well in Atlantis Blue, having been fully resprayed 18 years ago. Minor stone chips are visible consistent with age and use, while a small scratch on the rear quarter was repaired at the time of respray. Two rust spots are present in the lower quarters just above the sills; these have been fish-oiled in the past to prevent the corrosion from spreading but would need to be attended to in the future. Otherwise, the body is straight, accident-free and sits on factory steel painted wheels with original centre caps.
Inside, the cabin is described as very good and highly original. There is minor cracking noted on the passenger side front bucket seat, while the rest of the upholstery remains in tidy condition. The original AM radio has been replaced with an Alpine CD unit, otherwise the interior retains its factory specification.
Mechanically, the car remains in largely standard configuration, including its exhaust, manifolds and four-barrel Quadrajet carburettor.
As per Trading Garage Terms and Conditions, although Trading Garage has completed the following checks, bidders must satisfy themselves to the accuracy of the description and do any research they feel necessary before bidding.
