This 1978 Holden HZ Premier is a factory V8 example in its original colour, but has benefitted from a comprehensive restoration seven years ago. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 383 cubic inch (6.2-litre) stroked Chevrolet engine which sends power to the rear wheels. The transmission in this car is a four-speed automatic. The odometer currently shows 283,405km. Holden’s HZ represented the end of an era – the last of the full-size sedan. Visual changes were minimal compared to the preceding HX, but the Radial Tuned Suspension was a highlight, improving handling and comfort levels, and the Premier variant remained popular.

The upmarket Premier badge was in hot demand thanks to the standard auto gearbox and quad headlights. During the course of the HZ’s three-year production run various technical improvements were made to keep pace with the Ford Falcon. However, after 1980 Holden switched strategy from the full-size (W-sized) passenger car for the more economical (and smaller) Commodore. Sadly, since the model’s heyday the HZ became a popular test bed for modifications or racing, leaving original examples now in short supply. As a result, factory V8 examples such as this car attract significant interest on the used market. Finished in its original colour of Atlantis Blue and complete with a beige vinyl cabin, this HZ wears a period-correct colour scheme.

The interior is a swapped Holden Statesman cabin, which benefits from electric windows and air-conditioning. The car has a rebuilt turbo 700 four-speed transmission, a Fusion aftermarket head unit, and rebuilt disc-brake rear end with 3.9-inch rear differential. It rides on a set of 15-inch Retro Mags chrome wheels wrapped in Galaxy tyres. This Holden HZ was manufactured by Holden in Australia and complied in April 1978. It was extensively restored in 2017 according to the seller – this addressed the replaced interior, new suspension at the front and rear, and a stroked V8 engine to 6.

2L. The disc brakes and transmission were rebuilt at this time. Externally, this HZ Premier shows in good condition for its age and mileage. The Atlantis Blue paintwork displays nicely over bodywork and no major imperfections can be seen in the high-gloss finish. Upon closer inspection, light paint bubbles are noted around the rear-left tail-light and on the roof. Some light weather appears on the front end, as expected with use.

Chromework is polished to a shine. All four wheels present in good order without notable kerb rash. Interior-wise, this HZ Premier shows in excellent order. The vinyl upholstery shows no tears or scuffs, while the carpeting and headlining are unstained. Dash elements present without weathering marks or cracks and the woodgrain trim inlays are undamaged. Some tarnishing is noted on one of the door panel ash trays.
