This 1977 MGB V8 Roadster is a rubber-bumper model finished in Aztec Gold with black “GT” bonnet stripes over a black cloth interior and shows an indicated 24,998 miles. Originally built as an American export model, it was imported from California to Tasmania in 2001 for the purposes of a full re-engineering and V8 conversion, chosen for its zero-rust, accident-free body shell and monocoque chassis that readily accommodated the upgrade.
Between 2001 and 2007, the first Australian owner, an MG enthusiast, carried out a complete ground-up restoration and right-hand drive conversion, including a new dash, rack-and-pinion steering and a period-correct interior. At the same time, the original 1.8-litre engine was replaced with an all-alloy 3.5-litre Rover V8 sourced from a 1986 Range Rover, paired to a five-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel disc brakes. The car also gained a limited-slip differential, electronic fuel injection, upgraded manifolds and exhaust, Minilite alloys with 195/60 R15 Maxxis radials and an isolation switch. This work was professionally engineered and passed with an NSW compliance certificate from purchase in 2017.
The second owner held the car from 2007 to 2017, before it was purchased by the current owner in New South Wales, who has used it sparingly and kept it garaged. During current ownership, the bonnet and boot have been professionally repainted, and the car has continued to present in very good condition. The Aztec Gold paintwork is complemented by excellent chrome and rubber trim, with only very small, barely visible cosmetic bubbles that have not increased over time. The black “GT” stripes can be removed if desired. The Minilite wheels are unmarked with tyres showing complete tread, and all exterior and interior lights function correctly.
The interior presents in excellent order, with black carpets, velour seat trim, and plastic panels all in great condition. The original leather gear stick sleeve is intact but faded. The canopy and parade cover are in good condition and the dash layout retains the distinguishing features of US-delivered MGBs, including three windscreen wipers and smaller gauge clusters.
Mechanically, the V8 engine bay is clean and well-kept, with stainless steel components remaining bright. The car starts easily, runs smoothly and drives well with no known faults. Braking performance is strong and the lighter motor has improved handling balance. Included in the sale are a full fabric car cover, extra floor mats, a fire extinguisher, spare fuel filter, locking fuel cap and the standard spare wheel with good tread.
