This Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 (W116) is a rare Mercedes-Benz legend, delivered new to Hong Kong. Its previous collector owner spent countless dollars acquiring genuine AMG parts. Under the bonnet is a naturally-aspirated 6.8-litre V8 engine that produces 213kW and 546Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. The car’s odometer currently displays 144,000km. The Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 is a high-performance version of the W116-generation S-Class.

It features a bored-out version of the famous Mercedes 6.3-litre V8 engine – it was the biggest-capacity engine for Mercedes-Benz following the Second World War. It naturally followed on from the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 as the German marque’s flagship performance sedan. In addition to the gargantuan V8 engine under its bonnet, the 450 SEL 6.9 also introduced new technology such as hydropneumatic suspension, ABS, and automatic climate control. As expected of an S-Class range-topper, the 450 SEL 6.9 equipped a substantial amount of standard equipment and it was renowned for being the quickest vehicle of its type, in its era.

It was notably featured in Claude Lelouche’s iconic short film “C'était un rendez-vous”. Painted silver on the outside and upholstered with black leather inside the cabin, this 350 SEL 6.9 colour combination will find wide appeal. Exterior panels and grilles are highlighted by chrome trim, while the interior displays woodgrain inlays. Plenty of genuine pre-merger AMG parts have been sourced for this car. It rides on a set of 16-inch Pentastar alloy wheels wrapped in Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres. This Euro-spec 450 SEL was first delivered to Hong Kong. It is endowed with more powerful outputs than were offered to locally-delivered cars.

It was imported to Australia by a prominent West Australian Mercedes-Benz collector who fit period-specific AMG parts and reupholstered the interior. The current owner has had the vehicle maintained at Classic Garage in Fitzroy. Recent works include upgrades to its cooling, a rebuilt transmission, and new suspension parts. It is described as being mechanically perfect, according to the owner. The exterior condition of this 450 SEL 6.9 appears in good order for its age. The silver paintwork holds a good reflection in the sunlight and no paint bubbles or rust is identified. Very fine stone chips are seen on the front splitter.

Its chrome trim appears in polished condition. No obvious damage is noted on any of the four wheels. Inside the cabin, this W116 benefits from a retrim. The seat upholstery shows without tears, scuffing, or major wear, and the carpeting shows in similarly clean condition. Its woodgrain trim and chrome sill plates remain in good condition. The dashboard and door panels appear without scuff damage or spot stains. All gauges and switchgear appears to work as normal, though some subtle wear and tear is noted on the steering wheel stalks. This car will come with all original manuals and documentation.
