This 1974 BMW 2002 Tii is a fully restored, Australian delivered, matching numbers example of the marque’s iconic two-door sports coupe, finished in original colour Fjord blue paint. It is powered by the matching numbers 2.0-litre M10 inline four-cylinder engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection and paired with a four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The (working) odometer displays 7,806 kilometres indicated.
The 2002 Tii sat at the top of the 02 range for locally delivered cars and is widely regarded as the enthusiast’s choice thanks to its torquey mechanical fuel injection system, upgraded suspension and braking package, and sharper overall driving character compared to the standard 2002. This example is a later square tail light variant, representing the final evolution of the 02 design and subtle trim revisions – one of only 1233 RHD examples produced globally. With its compact proportions, rear-wheel-drive balance and rev-happy M10 engine, the tii remains one of BMW’s most celebrated classic performance coupes. This example is also fitted with the rare factory sunroof option.
According to the seller, the vehicle has had four owners since the 1980s, with the previous custodian retaining it for over 20 years, keeping garaged and only used in the dry. Service and parts receipts are said to date back to the early 1990s from various specialists.
More recent maintenance has been carried out by Dee Bee Engines and Garage 02 in Melbourne. The engine was fully rebuilt in 2020–21 by Brent May (prior to the formation of Garage 02) and the seller states the car has travelled less than 2,000 kilometres since. Supporting receipts are contained within a large blue binder. Original BMW booklets and the owner’s manual are included in a small blue sleeve, though no stamped service book is present. The original and rare tool roll is included
Mechanically, the seller is not aware of any recurring issues. The rebuilt engine is described as featuring a mild re-grind camshaft of approximately 284 degrees and breathing through a stainless sports exhaust. The four-speed manual gearbox is described as quiet, and the vehicle is fitted with a limited-slip differential (LSD). The radiator has been re-cored with a twin-core setup and the battery has been recently replaced. The engine bay is said to retain its original paint and factory decals.
The exterior presents in tidy condition overall and body is un-modified. Only factory or period-correct accessories such as Marchal fog / spot lights and 13” Cosmic wheels wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato CN36 tyres are fitted. The original bumper bars have been re-chromed and low profile European market over riders fitted.
Inside, the cabin is described as very clean, featuring a replaced headliner, uncut door cards and a reskinned, crack-free dashboard complete with working tii clock (almost unheard of in ’02 circles). Period Scheel seats are fitted along with a rare vintage Momo Prototipo steering wheel. A Becker Mexico radio is installed; it lights up but is best described as ornamental and not connected. VDO auxiliary gauges are mounted in the console and an Alpina style wooden shift knob fitted. A new set of 2002 floor mats are fitted in both the cabin and the boot.
Suspension has been upgraded with Eibach springs, Koni shock absorbers and Selby swaybars. The original 2002tii braking system has been given a recent refresh where needed, including reconditioned brake boosters and master cylinder. The callipers were also rebuilt at an earlier time and have <5000 kms on them.
Included in the sale are spare keys, stock front seats and springs should the next owner wish to refit them, spare Scheel headrest foams, fog light covers as pictured and floor mats.
