This 1973 Volkswagen Beetle L is a keenly-presented classic which shows in good condition throughout and stocks an upgraded 2.0-litre engine. Power is drawn from a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The rear-mounted motor’s outputs are sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer of this car currently displays 83,280 miles. As one of the most recognisable cars of all time, the Volkswagen Beetle needs little introduction. However, the story of how the little car came to fruition is an important one for the automotive industry in general.

It was first designed throughout the 1930s, ahead of World War II, but the impact of the global conflict meant “The People’s Car” couldn’t be manufactured in large quantities until the late 1940s. The idea behind the car originated from Adolf Hitler who raised the need for an economical, mechanically simple, and spacious vehicle for German citizens to drive across Germany’s autobahn highways. Obviously, this type of transport was also needed elsewhere in the world which is why you’ll see Volkswagen Beetles in just about every corner of the globe. They were even manufactured in Melbourne for a time. Today, the model is widely accepted as a significant point in the automotive history and examples trade regularly on the open market. This eye-catching Volkswagen Beetle sports an orange paintjob with two-tone black detailing. The cabin features grey fabric upholstery on the seats and black vinyl over the dashboard and surrounds.

It’s a modified example which features Holden Commodore front seats, a front oil cooler, reversing camera, a Sony head unit, and a fire extinguisher. This example’s engine has been stroked to 2.0L for more power. It rides on a set of 15-inch EMPI wheels which come wrapped in Goodyear tyres. Built new in Melbourne, Victoria in early 1973 and delivered locally, this Volkswagen Beetle continues to run strong. The car has remained part of a collection for many years and is only now being offered for auction. It has been rebuilt at some point throughout its life, though finer detail about its mechanical history is unknown.

Exterior-wise, this Beetle presents in decent order throughout. The orange paintwork displays a nice gloss in the light and the black paint portions contain no obvious swirl marking. Some standalone instances of paint cracking and stone chip damage are seen, especially on the orange paint. Chrome trim shows some wear and tear and will likely need a polish to rejuvenate the finish, while some panel join lines exhibit surface rust. Overfenders show some consistent stone chip peppering around the side sill area. This Beetle’s wheels display in fair condition, though wear and tear is noted on the faces. Inside the cabin this Beetle shows in fair condition.

The Commodore seats show no obvious stains or scuffs, though the fabric colour has worn with age. Signs of wear and tear are noted around the dashboard, radio area, and handbrake. Door card trims and the headlining appear in good condition without noticeable tarnishing. This car will be sold with all accompanying paperwork and manuals, plus two keys.
