This 1973 Holden HQ Monaro GTS is a matching-numbers Australian classic that remains largely original, travelled 2,200 km since a recent mechanical refresh. It is powered by its original 253 cubic inch V8 engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.
The HQ generation marked a turning point for the Monaro, introducing a new body design and improved refinement while maintaining the muscular performance that made it a national icon. The GTS variant combined Holden’s race-bred engineering with distinctive styling touches, including louvred guards, body stripes, and a sports interior, cementing its reputation as one of the most desirable Australian-built coupes of the 1970s.
This example was purchased by the current owner in 2018 at auction. While early history is not documented, the car is confirmed to be a genuine matching-numbers example that has been well preserved and sympathetically maintained.
In the current ownership, the engine, gearbox, and suspension have all been rebuilt or replaced approximately 2,200 km ago. Both front and rear springs and shocks were renewed along with the rubber components. The brakes are in good condition, the twin exhaust system remains in sound order, and the car has been fitted with new tyres.
Mechanically, the Monaro is described as excellent, starting easily and running smoothly. The engine has been fitted with a mild camshaft and Holley carburettor to improve performance, though the original carburettor is included should the next owner wish to return it to factory specification. The car is serviced annually and only driven on special occasions.
The exterior remains in original condition, retaining its factory paintwork and panels. As a result, there are some small scratches and fine dents consistent with age, though the finish presents well for a 52-year-old car and highlights its authenticity. The body is straight, and the paint retains an appealing patina that reflects its originality.
Inside, the cabin presents cleanly, with no rips or tears in the seats and trim. The dash and instrumentation appear tidy, and all major functions operate correctly. The car retains its original character and charm, with minimal signs of wear.
This Monaro GTS will be supplied with its original carburettor, offering an opportunity for collectors to return the car to complete factory specification if desired.
As per Trading Garage Terms and Conditions, although Trading Garage has completed the following checks, bidders must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of the description and undertake any research they feel necessary before bidding. All listings are sold in Australian dollars. There are no security interests recorded on the PPSR against the serial number, and it is not recorded as written off or stolen.
An original, matching-numbers Holden HQ Monaro GTS that combines mechanical freshness with genuine survivor appeal — a well-maintained example of one of Australia’s most iconic muscle cars.
