This 1972 Volkswagen Kombi Dormobile is a 30-year ownership example finished in two-tone red and white with documented refurbishment by a Volkswagen specialist. It is powered by a 1.7-litre (1700cc) flat air-cooled engine paired with a manual transmission driving the rear wheels, and the odometer displays 61,135 miles indicated.
The early-1970s Kombi remains one of the most recognisable and usable classics of its era, combining simple air-cooled mechanicals with a practical platform that has long been favoured for touring and camping. Dormobile conversions are particularly desirable for their period camper layout and pop-top configuration, offering the classic Kombi experience with genuine touring usability.
This example is Australian-delivered, with an original VW service record book retained. It has had two previous owners prior to the current custodian, who has owned the vehicle for approximately 30 years. The car was purchased in September 1996 showing 41,600 miles and has been maintained as a passion project since, remaining largely undercover and sparingly used.
Servicing and refurbishment have been carried out by Australian VW Performance Centre in Croydon. A major renovation was completed there on 28 August 2008 with documentation available. Works included locating and repairing rusted sections and panels, recovering the seats, fitting new canvas to the pop top, preparing and repainting the vehicle in two-tone enamel, cleaning and stone guarding the underside, and completing a full service and tune up. A second deep cycle battery was also fitted. More recently, the clutch, brakes and battery have been replaced, with a full service completed in December 2025. Invoices are included, along with notes on further minor repairs that may be considered by an enthusiast and may be relevant for roadworthy.
Mechanically, the vehicle is reported to operate well with no known faults. The 1700cc engine currently fitted is not the original unit but has been in the vehicle since the current owner purchased it. It features dual-port heads and a twin sports exhaust and is described as being in good condition, having covered limited mileage in recent decades.
Externally, the two-tone red and white paintwork presents well, consistent with prior refurbishment. The underside was cleaned and stone guarded as part of the restoration works.
Inside, the cabin has been refurbished with recovered seating and replacement pop-top canvas. Camper equipment includes a second deep cycle battery for onboard appliances, a three-way fridge, a brand new stove, an electric fuel pump, a tachometer, and a camping tent which is noted as unused.
The vehicle has undergone restoration as outlined above. No accident history is reported.
Included in the sale are the original VW service record book, owner’s manuals, receipts for work completed, a spare motor for parts, and one set of keys.
