This 1972 Chrysler Valiant (VH) Charger is a tribute to a muscle car legend, with countless dollars spent on modifications and upkeep. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 408 cubic inch (6.7-litre) stroker V8 engine that sends power to the rear wheels. This engine is mated to a three-speed transmission. The odometer currently displays 57,576km but has travelled aprox 15,000kms on the new motor. The Chrysler Valiant is an Australian icon; one of the “big three” locally-made cars through the 1970s (alongside the Holden Kingswood and Ford Falcon). Where the Chrysler Valiant earned its stripes transporting families and executive types, the Valiant Charger is the two-door version that won the hearts and minds of Aussies thanks to its muscle car status and outlandish styling.

The VH Charger was the first iteration of the performance coupe and is now the most desirable generation. It was offered in a number of variants with different engine options, though the one everybody wanted was a Charger R/T (Road/Track). Chrysler’s production car racing efforts in Australia were based on the Charger R/T; a true representation of the old adage: “race on Sunday, sell on Monday”. Today, the Valiant Charger remains a local success story and sorted R/T examples are becoming hot property on the used car market. Painted in Pepper Grey metallic with black R/T striping and a black bonnet, this R/T Tribute certainly looks the part. Inside, the cabin is upholstered with black vinyl.

Numerous modifications are included on this car such as aluminium heads, quick fuel carburettor, MSD ignition, B&M Stealth slap stick shifter, custom R/T and 408 badges, aftermarket stereo and speakers, a kill switch, Hopper Stopper front disc brakes, electric fuel pump, and Auto Meter gauges. It rides on a set of 15-inch chrome alloy wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson street slick tyres on the rear and Goodyears on the front. This Valiant Charger started life as a manual six-cylinder car and has now been transformed into an R/T tribute by the current owner. It has been with the current owner since 2008. Since then, it received a repaint seven years ago, a new 360ci engine was stroked to 408ci by Superformance (QLD) and installed in 2018, and various other supporting mods were added. It now runs an oversized starter motor, an aluminium Aussie Desert Cooler radiator, and a stainless steel overflow radiator tank.

The exterior presentation of this VH Charger displays in fantastic order for its age. The Pepper Grey paintwork still shows a strong metallic fleck in the sunlight and no points of scratching are noted on its panel work. The bumpers were re-chromed five years ago and display no pitting marks. Likewise, the whole front end has been redone and powder-coated. The black stripes and bonnet display in brilliant condition without fade. All four chrome wheels display no kerb rash damage or tarnishing.

Inside, this Charger’s cabin appears in great condition. The black vinyl upholstery shows without damage and there is no sag seen in the bolsters or seat bases. The dashboard and original steering wheel appears without wear and tear. The aftermarket gauges are all connected and a Pioneer head unit takes place of the original radio. Relevant documentation will be provided with this car.
