This 1971 Ford Falcon XY GT is finished in Vermilion Fire over a black interior and is powered by its original specification 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 paired with a four speed manual transmission. One of the most iconic Australian muscle cars ever produced, the XY GT represents the peak of Ford’s local performance era and remains highly sought after for its motorsport pedigree and unmistakable presence.
Released in 1970, the XY Falcon GT cemented its place in Australian motoring history through its dominance on road and track, most notably with Allan Moffat’s Bathurst victories. Powered by the 351 Cleveland V8 and backed by a close ratio manual gearbox, the GT combined straight line performance with improved handling and braking over its predecessors. Today, genuine XY GTs are regarded as blue chip Australian classics.
The current owner is the third custodian of the car, having purchased it in 2001. The car underwent a full ground up restoration in 1999 and 2000, during which it was completely stripped and rebuilt over approximately two years. As part of that restoration the colour was changed from white to Vermilion Fire, the transmission was converted from automatic to four speed manual, and a correct Golde sunroof and period eight track stereo were fitted. The current owner acquired the car approximately six months after completion of the restoration and has maintained it carefully ever since.
Servicing has been carried out annually throughout the current ownership, with work handled by Woodville Park Auto. The car has been serviced ahead of the auction. Approximately two years ago the brakes were replaced, and a new clutch was fitted around 1,000 miles ago. Around five years ago the cylinder heads were removed and rebuilt to suit 98 octane unleaded fuel, including stainless steel valves, while retaining standard specification and original character. A new Holley carburettor was also fitted. Cosmetic work and minor repairs, including replacement of the sunroof cables, were completed by LJT Restoration in Adelaide approximately 18 months ago.
The exterior presents in excellent condition and the car has reportedly never been driven in the rain during the current ownership. The bodywork is described as being in outstanding order, with no accident damage reported. The interior is also in excellent condition and reflects the level of care shown throughout ownership.
Mechanically, the car is described as being in excellent order with no known issues. The drivetrain remains largely original in specification with no performance modifications, and the car has travelled approximately 4,000 miles during the current ownership.
As per Trading Garage Terms and Conditions, although Trading Garage has completed the following checks, bidders must satisfy themselves to the accuracy of the description and conduct any research they feel necessary before bidding.
