This 1971 Datsun 240Z is a restored Australian-delivered example of Nissan’s legendary sports coupe, showing 76,335 miles on its odometer. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre inline-six engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.

Launched in 1969, the Datsun 240Z established Nissan as a global performance brand, combining elegant design, reliable mechanicals, and accessible sports car performance. Its long-bonnet, short-deck proportions were inspired by European grand tourers, while its smooth straight-six engine and lightweight chassis made it a genuine driver’s car. Australian-delivered examples are particularly sought after today for their rarity, originality, and connection to the earliest Z-car heritage.

This car has been in the same family for over four decades and is understood to have had three owners from new. Delivered new in Australia, it was purchased by the current owner’s father-in-law in 1982 from the original owner. He subsequently stripped and rebuilt the car to factory condition before storing it for several years. In 2000, ownership was transferred to the current custodian, who drove the car sparingly until 2016 when a comprehensive ground-up restoration was undertaken. While supporting documentation is limited, this account of the car’s history has been passed down within the family.

The restoration included a complete bare-metal strip and rebuild. All rust was removed, and the body was carefully realigned to achieve correct panel fitment. During the process, several performance and safety upgrades were incorporated to enhance drivability while retaining the car’s period-correct character.

Mechanical improvements include a head conversion for unleaded fuel, triple Weber carburettors, extractors, and a Stage 2 Crow cam. The car also features coil-over adjustable suspension with larger wheels and tyres for improved handling and stability. The cam and carburettors were fitted and tuned prior to its most recent service in June 2025.

Servicing has been handled by a 240Z specialist mechanic based in Nerang, who trained on these cars when new and continues to maintain select examples. The car was most recently serviced in June 2025 and is described as running well, having passed a safety inspection without issue. If left stationary for extended periods, it can run slightly rough for the first 15 minutes before settling into a steady idle. The headlights, which date back to 1995, remain operational but are slightly dim due to age.

Mechanically, the 240Z performs strongly and is free from known faults or leaks. The engine pulls cleanly, the gearbox shifts smoothly, and the car drives as expected from a restored and well-maintained example.

The exterior presents in excellent condition, with straight panels, consistent paintwork, and no signs of corrosion. Inside, the cabin shows light wear in line with its age but remains tidy and authentic to the car’s era.

The car has not been involved in any known accidents since 1982 and has been kept in enclosed garage storage for the majority of its life.
