This 1967 Mercedes-Benz (W112) 300SE Coupe has recently benefitted from extensive mechanical, cosmetic, and interior restoration, and presents in great working order for its next owner. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine which develops 126kW (170hp). Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic gearbox. The odometer of this car currently shows 92,699 miles. Mercedes-Benz earned an enviable reputation throughout the 1950s for building respectable and well-appointed luxury sedans such as the W189 300d Adenauer. At the turn of the new decade the W189 needed replacement and Mercedes-Benz created the W112 300SE as the next best thing.

Building upon the success of the W111, the W112 300SE used a single engine option but was available in sedan, coupe, or cabriolet body styles. The all-alloy M189 engine fitted to the 300SE was a development of the legendary 300SL Gullwing’s powertrain. Compared to the W111, the W112 featured more exterior chrome and standard features like power steering, pneumatic self-levelling suspension, and an automatic transmission. The W112 was a particularly exclusive car in period – especially the Coupe variant which sold just 2,419 cars. Still painted in its original Havana Brown and presenting with its factory cream leather upholstery, this W112 is a product of its era. The exterior shows with extensive chrome trim, while the cabin features woodgrain trim inlays across the dash.

It was delivered with a Becker Grand Prix radio, air-conditioning, and an automatic aerial. The car also features stone guards on the front end. It rides on a set of 14-inch body-coloured wheels wrapped in Nankang tyres. This W112 was manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart, Germany and delivered new to Australia. The sellers estimate the car has had five owners overall and took ownership themselves in 2019. It has primarily stayed between Canberra and Victoria throughout its life.

Extensive restorative works over the past five years, completed by Bundy Classic Car Restorations, has included mechanical, transmission, air suspension works, as well as a reupholstered dash, woodgrain trim, re-chromed bumpers, new carpets/mats, and new tyres. The owner is unaware of any mechanical faults. This car’s external condition presents in great order for a car of its age. The Havana Brown paintwork shows no marks of imperfection or fade, and the roof, bonnet, guards, and quarter panels have recently been repainted. Underneath the boot lip, the rear end shows obvious scratch marks around the number plate area and chips on the upper edge of the panel. The seller notes the rear right-side guard may have rust.

The wheel caps show some minor chips and fade, as expected with use. Interior-wise, this W112 shows in good order and obvious care has been taken in its presentation. However, the original upholstery shows significant cracking and damage on the driver’s side. Light scuffs and fade marks are noted around the door panels and on the headlining. Woodgrain trim shows in great condition. All accompanying documentation, ownership history, and recent service invoices will be supplied with this car.

It has just passed a Victorian roadworthy inspection in February 2024.
