This 1966 Fiat 500 Bambina is a charming example of the iconic Italian city car, finished in light purple metallic with white accent stripes along the bonnet, doors and rear quarters. Complemented by a red vinyl interior, it shows an indicated 84,683 miles and remains true to its original mechanical configuration. Built by Torino Motors in New Zealand, this example is one of just 769 Bambinas assembled locally in 1966 and offers a well-documented ownership and restoration history.
Chassis records show it was first registered in Auckland on July 26th 1966, remaining in the city until 2011. It was later purchased by a New Zealand collector who retained the car in his collection for 13 years before selling it to the current owner, who imported it into Melbourne in December 2024. Documentation included with the sale confirms the car was fully disassembled, acid-dipped and rebuilt in 1999, with ongoing maintenance and $5,000 of mechanical work carried out in late 2011. According to the seller and the New Zealand government website “Carjam”, which tracks mileage over a vehicle’s life, the current odometer reading is believed to be accurate.
Recent service work performed in 2025 by the current owner includes an engine oil and gearbox oil change, new distributor points and cap, a rebuilt carburettor and new air filter. The car is reported to start and run smoothly, with all electrics functioning correctly and no known oil or exhaust leaks. Its drum brakes provide adequate stopping power, as expected for the period. The exterior presents beautifully in its current colour, with well-maintained chrome and no evidence of corrosion either on the body panels or undercarriage. Two small chips are visible on the door edges along with a light scuff near the passenger-side windscreen. The black folding sunroof appears near-new and operates as intended. Inside, the red vinyl seats show only light wear, the carpet is in excellent condition, and all gauges are working. Some surface corrosion is noted on the interior driver’s quarter window surround, but otherwise the interior is tidy and consistent with careful long-term ownership.
The car retains its original mechanical setup and has not been modified. It rides on classic steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and features the correct brightwork and trim details. The colour has been changed from the factory pale blue to its current metallic lilac, giving the car a unique but tasteful personality while preserving its original charm.
Included in the sale are the original owner’s handbook, Fiat workshop manuals, a detailed folder of receipts dating back to the 1999 restoration, and original ownership documents from 1966.
