This 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible is finished in its factory Rangoon Red over a black Pony interior and presents as a well-maintained first-generation example with documented restoration and mechanical upgrades. It is powered by a 289 cubic inch V8 engine paired with a C4 automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. The odometer displays 66,936 miles indicated.
Introduced in April 1964, the Mustang quickly became one of the most successful model launches in automotive history. Its long bonnet, short deck proportions and accessible performance defined the pony car segment and established a formula that endures to this day. Early convertibles remain especially desirable thanks to their clean chrome detailing, simple interior layouts and unmistakable 1960s character.
Built on May 4, 1965 at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan plant (body code 76A), this example left the factory in Rangoon Red (code J) with a Black Crinkle Vinyl interior (trim code 26). The cabin has since been upgraded to a Pony interior specification with centre console and retrimmed seats, with receipts included. Air conditioning has also been fitted, enhancing usability in Australian conditions.
Originally delivered with a 200 cubic inch inline six-cylinder engine and C4 three-speed automatic transmission, the car has since been professionally converted to 289 cubic inch V8 power. The upgrade includes a thicker radiator, upgraded rear differential, improved braking system, heavier-duty springs, dual exhaust and Ford Performance valves, providing stronger drivability and performance consistent with V8 specification Mustangs of the era. The engine and differential were rebuilt in 2007, the car was repainted in 2008 and the steering and suspension were overhauled front and rear in 2010. The most recent service was completed in June 2025 by Southbank Prestige Service Centre.
The exterior presents in excellent condition, with the Rangoon Red paintwork described as clean and free from notable dents or damage. Chrome trim shows well with only minor surface corrosion consistent with age. The vehicle was resprayed in 2007 as part of its restoration. No accident history is known to the seller.
Inside, the upgraded Pony interior remains in strong condition, with carpets, trim and instrumentation presenting well. The car retains a period-correct appearance while benefitting from thoughtful enhancements.
Included in the sale are spare keys, service booklets, receipts, owner’s manuals and associated documentation. The vehicle is supplied with Victorian registration plates MST-65.
