This 1965 Ford Mustang 289 Hardtop benefits from a recent restoration that included an extensive mechanical overhaul and a complete respray. Under the bonnet lies a naturally-aspirated 289 cubic inch (4.7-litre) V8 engine which outputs 168kW (225hp). Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The odometer of this vehicle currently displays 92,432 miles. Introduced in 1964 and inspired by the P51 Mustang fighter plane, the Ford Mustang is arguably the most well-known muscle car the world has ever seen and its name continues even to this day. Designed as a four-seater and intended to be highly configurable to suit varying buyer tastes, the Ford Mustang is respected as the people’s sports car.

Unique for the era were sports-car attributes such as bucket seats and a floor-mounted shifter. Features unheard of in its rivals such as the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. The Mustang achieved sales success instantaneously, selling over a million units in just two years. Continual model year updates to the Mustang ensured its sales success wasn’t an anomaly. However, early cars are among the most desirable. This car is finished in metallic blue and specifies a white vinyl interior for an all-round eye-catching colour combination.

The exterior is adorned by chrome detailing befitting of the car’s era. Some light modifications are made to this car including a Pioneer head unit, bonnet pins, mild cam, a carburettor rebuild, extractors and a dual-exhaust system. The car rides on a set of period-perfect 15-inch Scott Drake wheels wrapped in Rydanz tyres. Built in 1965 by Ford in the United States, this Mustang has spent 10 years in Western Australia before relocating to Melbourne 12 months ago. The seller has completed various works such as a new alternator, new wheels and tyres, new windscreen, a reconditioned fuel tank, new starter motor and harmonic balancer, a transmission service and a refitted Pony interior. It is now said to run in good mechanical condition and drives well.

Exterior-wise, this Mustang presents in remarkable order given its age and mileage. The blue metallic paintwork was resprayed to its current form and shines beautifully in the light. External chrome and badgework is polished to a high shine. The seller notes the right rear quarter has been repaired at some point, though this is not obvious. All four wheels are new and display no kerb rash, while tyres are also near-new. Inside the cabin this Mustang is shown to a high standard.

The white vinyl upholstery displays no undue creases or marks, while the carpeting appears without any marks whatsoever. Under the bonnet there are elements of surface rust, though the remainder of the engine bay has been blasted with dry ice. The car’s dashboard displays in good overall condition, while instrumentation functions as normal.
