This 1962 Volvo P1800 is an early, hand built example that is believed to be one of less than 60 RHD examples still in existence which also benefits from a recent rotisserie restoration. Power is derived from a naturally-aspirated 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 74kW (100hp). It’s mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive function. The odometer currently shows 52,437 miles. The Volvo P1800 Jensen, first showcased at the 1961 Brussels Motor Show, is celebrated for its striking design, distinctive tailfins, and remarkable performance. Styled by Pelle Petterson under the guidance of Pietro Frua, this classic gained fame as Roger Moore’s car in The Saint TV series.

This particular 1962 model is a rare example of the early hand-built cars produced at the Jensen Motor Factory in England. It retains unique details such as the "bullhorn" front bumper, an intricate egg-crate grille, white front indicator lenses, and the elegant C-pillar Volvo script. The interior features chrome-plated brass brightwork, distinguishing it from later models that used pre-formed plastic. However, only very early examples (like this one) were built at the British factory before Volvo took production in-house itself. These early-build examples are considered very valuable today. In 2017, it was purchased by its current owner, who undertook a meticulous restoration to bring it back to its factory-original Dark Metallic Grey (#71) over a Red (#303) interior.

The original colour combination includes a prominent black dash fascia, chrome-rimmed Smiths gauges, and grey carpets inside the cabin. There are no obvious aftermarket modifications made to this car. However, it is equipped with a vintage Blaupunkt radio with Bluetooth connectivity. It rides on a set of 15-inch steel wheels with chrome hubcaps. They come wrapped in period-correct Michelin XAS tyres. Manufactured at the Jensen factory in England and delivered new to its first owner in South Africa, this Jensen has substantial documentation to support its history.

The car was imported to Australia some time in the early 1970s and it has since passed through several owners on its way to the current custodian. The car underwent a full rotisserie restoration between 2018 and 2021 including a complete ‘nut and bolt’ refurbishment of the drivetrain. This included a complete rebuild of the engine and brakes as well as a complete new wiring loom. The seller states that the car has completed less than 600 miles since the restoration. The most recent maintenance was at Voldat Automotive in Moorabbin (VIC) in April 2023. There are no signs of wear and tear on this Volvo P1800 – it displays in as-new condition.

The restoration was such that all cosmetic imperfections were removed, while the dark grey metallic paintwork continues to shine in brilliant order as would be expected with such a recent restoration. All chrome is polished brightly, the grilles and badging contain no marks, and the glass shows no pitting marks. All four chrome hub caps present without dents and no kerb rash is observed. The interior is a similar story of untouched condition. Red upholstery appears without scuffs or stains, no sagging is seen on the seats, and the dash instrumentation presents in immaculate order. There are no stains or scuffs on the carpet and its door panels appear pristine.
