This 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 ‘Flat Floor’ FHC is an Australian-delivered car which boasts an incredibly-low mileage and iconic cherry red colour scheme. It’s powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.8-litre inline-six-cylinder engine which produces 198kW (265hp). Outputs are sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer of this car states 14,316 miles from new. Ask any automotive enthusiast to think of an iconic mid-century sports car and it won’t be long before the Jaguar E-Type’s name is mentioned.
Such is the reputation of the segment-defining sports car that the E-Type is now referenced as one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. Even Enzo Ferrari himself reportedly referred to the design as being “the most beautiful car ever made”. Part of the reason for its groundbreaking success were attributes such its 240km/h top speed, sub-7-second 0-100km/h time, unibody construction, all round disc brakes, and independent front and rear suspension. Series 1 E-Types are among the most desirable variants, but even then, there are sub-types which are preferred more than others, such as this early “flat floor” example. Painted in red and finished with a tan-upholstered interior, this E-Type’s specification turns heads.
Chromed exterior detailing is seen on the exterior while metallic trim inlays highlight the dashboard array. There appears to be no overt modifications made to this vehicle’s condition and it retains its original as-delivered paint and interior. The car is equipped with a set of 15-inch chrome wire wheels with “knock-off” hubs. They come wrapped in Vredestein tyres. Built new in Coventry, England and delivered to its first owner in Caulfield, Victoria, this E-Type has a well-documented history.
The story goes that the original owner was a bank manager who purchased the car locally and was forced to park it up for 25 years, to hide from his wife. After coming out of hibernation it was sold to a second owner in the 1990s with 1200 original miles showing. The car was then provided to Melbourne dealership Duttons in 2017 to sell to the current owner. Under its current stewardship the car has been serviced every three years and all original parts have been retained. Exterior condition shows in brilliant order throughout considering this E-Type boasts such low mileage.
Red paintwork presents in complete condition with no endemic imperfections; however the paint is in need of a detail. Likewise, chrome could benefit from polishing. Very minor stone chips are seen on the front end, though have minimal impact on this car’s otherwise impressive condition. All four wheels display without noticeable kerb rash and are polished to a bright shine. Inside the cabin this E-Type remains in brilliant order overall.
The tan upholstery shows no stains or scuffs, while no creases or indentations are present on seats. Dash presentation and gauge instrumentation are shown to a high standard. Some scuffing and heel marks are seen on the driver’s side floor, though this is considered commensurate with use. This car will come with its original tyres, extensive service records, original delivery documentation, and maintenance charts. As per Trading Garage’s Terms and Conditions, although Trading Garage have completed the following checks, bidders must satisfy themselves to the accuracy of the description and do any research, they feel necessary before bidding.
