This 2017 Supercars Super5000 Prototype is the one-off development car constructed for the proposed Super5000 open wheel category and is identified in period reporting as chassis 001. It was developed around a 5.0 litre naturally aspirated Supercars V8 producing more than 447 kW (600 hp), paired with an Albins transaxle and rear wheel drive; however, the vehicle is offered without an engine or gearbox.
Super5000 was conceived as a modern interpretation of the Formula 5000 category, with plans for it to join the Supercars support program from 2018. Designed in South Australia by Oscar Fiorinotto’s Supashock Racing Engineering, the prototype was tested at Phillip Island, Mallala and Adelaide International Raceway by Garth Tander, Lee Holdsworth and Alex Davison. The Super5000 project later combined with Chris Lambden’s Formula Thunder 5000 concept, contributing to the development pathway that ultimately led to the separate S5000 category.
The car is constructed around a full carbon fibre monocoque and is presented in its Wilson Security Super5000 livery with open wheel bodywork, front and rear wings and a single seat cockpit. The seller advises that more than $2 million was invested in developing and constructing the prototype. It was designed to accept Supercars running gear, although the seller states that it may also be adapted to suit a Ford or Chevrolet crate engine. Any adaptation, completion or recommissioning work would be the responsibility of the purchaser.
Period reporting records chassis 001 as the development car used throughout the Super5000 testing program. Leanne Tander drove it during its public debut at the 2017 Sandown 500, while contemporary reports also identify Garth Tander, Lee Holdsworth and Alex Davison among its test drivers. Rusty French placed a deposit on chassis 001 during 2017 with the intention of entering Thomas Randle in the proposed category, although the planned Super5000 series did not proceed in its original form.
The seller describes the vehicle as complete apart from its engine and gearbox. It is therefore offered as a non-running prototype requiring the installation of a suitable powertrain and any associated inspection, fabrication, testing and recommissioning before use. No representation is made regarding eligibility for any current racing category or compliance with present motorsport regulations.
