This 1988 BMW (E30) 325is is an Australian-delivered example with a solid history and recent extensive mechanical documentation. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre inline-six-cylinder engine that puts out 125kW and 222Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently shows 148,900km. Most automotive enthusiasts will recognise the BMW E30 M3 as the most well-renowned member of the E30 – and arguably M3 – families, but the homologation special wasn’t offered to all worldwide markets. A high-performance solution for countries unlucky enough to go without the E30 M3, such as Australia, was the E30 325is.

The E30 325is, also known as the M325i in New Zealand, runs a close-ratio five-speed Getrag gearbox, an LSD, equips unique Bilstein shock absorbers, uses a thicker real roll bar to prevent understeer, and is 15mm lower in ride height. Visually, it featured BMW’s Shadowline window treatment, a rear spoiler, M Tech steering wheel, and sports seats. It features six-cylinder power whereas the E30 M3 relied on a high-revving four-cylinder, so it could be argued that the E30 325is is more desirable. However, both remain highlights of the E30 range and command a sizeable premium over their peers on the used market. Finished in a Diamond Schwarz colourway on the outside and matched by a grey Uberkaro trim interior, this specification is quintessential E30. The car has been kept largely original (it even retains its original cassette radio), but it does have an aftermarket exhaust system.

It sits on a set of 14-inch ‘Basketweave’ alloy wheels wrapped in Kumho tyres. Manufactured new in Germany and delivered to Australia, this E30 continues to run strong in 2024 and is sold with maintenance records. It is understood to have spent the majority of its time in NSW, though the owner is uncertain about the previous ownership. It has reportedly undergone a mechanical overhaul in the past. Exterior condition appears in great order for its age, as evidence points towards the car having a respray at some point in its life. The black paintwork reflects nicely in the sunlight without major imperfection, though smaller points of stone chipping are seen on the front end.

There are multiple paint scuffs on the bumper near the exhaust. Fair kerb rash is seen on the wheels. Inside the cabin, this E30 has been preserved well. Minimal marks of wear and tear are identified on the seat fabric, while the seats themselves contain no obvious sag. There is a minor tear in the passenger seat’s bolster and a slight stain in the driver’s seat. The dash appears to be uncracked, which is rare for an E30, however scuffs show on the outer edge.

Bubbles are seen in the trim underneath the handbrake and surface rust is shown around the ignition barrel. The floor mats and headlining display without notable wear. This car will come with current documentation (including recent maintenance receipts carried out by the current owner) and an original tool kit.
