This 1982 Mazda RX-7 (Series 2) is an Australian-delivered example of the little-known “Greg Hansford Special” edition, presented with signed books. It is powered by a 1.1-litre 12A rotary engine which outputs roughly 85kW and 152Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently shows 255,544km. Mazda is famous for its use of the rotary engine and the model that put the engine on the map is the RX-7 sports car. Manufactured between 1978 and 2002, the lightweight Wankel rotary engine was more compact, smoother, and required fewer moving parts compared to a piston-driven engine. Rotary engines are well-known for their ability to rev higher and produce more top-end power than conventional engines, especially with respect to their relatively small capacities.

The RX-7 was especially popular in its home market because it sidestepped strict road taxes based on engine size. The RX-7 was produced in three generations, this car being a Series 2 example of the first generation. It features integrated bumpers, wraparound tail-lights, and black rubber side mouldings. This specific car was designed to commemorate Greg Hansford, a notable Australian racing driver and rotary fan, with a special body kit and unique wheels. Painted Formula White on the outside and upholstered with brown trim inside the cabin, this RX-7’s specification is quintessential 1980s. There are subtle aftermarket modifications made to the car including an exhaust and mild port. Inside, the car features sought-after Recaro sports seats and a Momo steering wheel.

It rides on a set of 15-inch Simmons wheels wrapped in Goodyear/Nankang tyres. Built new in Japan in June 1983 and complied in Australia in October 1983, this RX-7 has reportedly never been in an accident. It is a “Greg Hansford Special” edition – reportedly one of just 150 produced. The current owner has held the vehicle for the last 23 years. Its maintenance history is currently unknown. It was resprayed 13 years ago. On the outside, this RX-7 presents in modest condition.

There are obvious signs of scrapes and scuffs, especially around the front bumper, while the paintwork itself contains swirl marks. The car could benefit from a thorough polish and detail. Signs of paint wear are noted around the fender flares. Exterior plastics have faded with age and show swirl marks. The wheels display in average condition with scuffs around the hubs and scratches on the rims. The interior presentation is poor. The bolstering on the Recaro sports seats has sagged with age and is splitting on the driver’s side, while tears in the fabric are noted on the seat inserts.

There are stains on the rear seats which also display sagging fabric. The Momo steering wheel is torn and deteriorated. Cracks are noted in the dashboard and trim is flaking near the air vents. Carpeting appears in fair order for its age. The owner states signed books will be supplied with this vehicle.
