This 1982 Porsche 924 is an honest example which represents an attractive entry point to the illustrious German brand. Under the bonnet is a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which outputs 92kW (123hp) through the rear wheels. The transmission in this car is a five-speed Getrag manual. The odometer currently displays 77,953km. Through the early 1970s Porsche and Volkswagen embarked on a joint venture to each create a sports car – for Porsche it would be an entry-level sports car, while Volkswagen’s would be a top-of-the-line model.

Unfortunately, this coincided with a worldwide oil crisis whereby consumers gravitated towards cars more frugal on fuel. For Volkswagen, this was enough to ditch the project entirely, but Porsche forged ahead with the plan to create its sports car mainly because it needed a replacement for the 912E and 914. Considering Porsche’s design and engineering departments did the vast majority of the work anyway, it was simple for the brand to pick-up from where Volkswagen left-off. The 924 was the end result of that project – an entry-level model which became a sales success for the brand, especially in the US. Using a Volkswagen Group-sourced motor, it even managed to use minimal fuel.

This example is painted Surinam Red metallic over a brown vinyl and cloth-upholstered interior. There are no aftermarket modifications made to this car which retains its original as-delivered colour combination. When new, this car was optioned with electric mirrors, a cassette player, rear wiper, sunroof, and electric windows. The car rides on a set of 14-inch wheels which hide yellow brake calipers. The tyres are Bridgestone Turanzas.

Manufactured by Porsche in Germany and delivered new through Hamilton’s Porsche in South Yarra, VIC, this 924 has passed through the hands of roughly 5 previous owners according to the seller. Information available suggests the car’s maintenance history began strong but tapered off later in life. Service entries in the logbook are missing for the last 20 years, though the current owner has replaced hi-tension leads, spark plugs and rectified an issue with fuel pump fuse after purchasing it in July 2022. Exterior-wise, this car’s condition shows in fair order throughout. The red paintwork still displays nicely in the light with good metallic shine, while there are no major dents.

However, there are several smaller points of chipping and scratching. The front end contains various scuffs and stone chips, the doors have paint scratches and chips, there’s a hole in the sunroof clearcoat, paint fade around the front Porsche badge, a dent in the front right quarter panel, and black plastics and rubbers have weathered. Wheels show no major signs of damage or kerb rash. Inside the cabin this Porsche shows in sub-par condition. The fabric seats still hold a good shape, though tears are seen in the driver’s seat – some have been patched.

Plastics such as switchgear and door handles appear weathered, while some vents have cracked. Door cards and the dashboard show in good condition, and carpeting appears without obvious staining. Some light surface rust is observed around the boot catches. All accompanying documentation will be supplied with this sale.
