This 1979 Autobianchi A112 Abarth presents as a rare Italian hot hatch in converted race specification, showing an indicated 59,382km on its odometer. It is finished in red over a black cloth interior that now features race-focused upgrades.
The Autobianchi A112 was Fiat’s answer to the Mini Cooper, a lightweight city car sharpened in Abarth guise with upgraded suspension, styling tweaks, and a rev-happy 1.0-litre engine. Though modestly powered, the A112 Abarth became a cult favourite in European motorsport, competing in hillclimbs, rallies, and track events throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Survivors in race-prepared condition are uncommon, particularly outside Europe and Japan.
This example was originally delivered overseas and later imported to Australia, where it has passed through two local owners. While its earlier life in Italy and Japan is undocumented, the car has since been maintained by Northern Alfa in Thomastown, though it has seen minimal use under the current owner — only driven to and from two shows.
Mechanically, the A112 Abarth is said to be in good condition. It has been converted from a road car to a race and hillclimb machine, with modifications including a roll bar, Sparco Sprint racing seats, harnesses (now expired for competition), modified suspension and an engine-mounted oil cooler. The exact build details are unknown, as the conversion work was carried out prior to its import into Australia.
Visually, the car presents very well for age. The red paintwork is complemented by professionally installed and painted flared guards that house a set of new wheels and tyres. The race-prepared interior features a roll bar, Sparco Sprint bucket seats, and harnesses, which are now expired for sanctioned competition. The cabin presents in great order overall, with minimal wear relative to age and use.
While the car is extensively modified, it retains the charm of the A112 Abarth, combining light weight and agility with the purposeful stance of a track car. No accident damage has been reported and aside from the flared guards, the shell has not undergone major restorative work.
