This 1974 BMW (E9) 3.0 CS is a brilliantly-presented and Australian-delivered classic BMW which boasts a fully rebuilt engine and upgraded five-speed gearbox conversion. Under the bonnet lies a naturally-aspirated 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine producing 134kW (180hp). Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission in this example. The odometer currently states 4972 kilometres. In the 1960s BMW introduced its latest generation of vehicles, dubbed “Neue Klasse”.

In addition to run-of-the-mill passenger sedans and economical hatches, the most desirable iteration of the Neue Klasse platform was the BMW E9 – the sports coupe. It pairs the iconic M30 six-cylinder engine inside a Karmann-designed body. Early variants were known as the 2800 CS, while the updated 3.0 CS, with its stronger engine, is one of the most collectible versions and its unique styling aspects are still seen in BMW models today. In addition, the car helped BMW garner a reputation for building sports cars with strong 3.0-litre six-cylinder engines – a recipe it still employs with its current model line-up.

The most famous BMW E9 is the 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” which raced in various European endurance events, though well-sorted 3.0 CS examples are steadily rising in value worldwide. Painted in a dark metallic blue over a tan leather interior, this E9’s unique specification presents beautifully even today. The bodywork is accented by polished chrome trim, while the interior is finished with woodgrain panel inserts for the dash. Though it’s badged as a 3.

0 CSi, this car features triple Weber carburettors and is in fact a 3.0 CS. There are no major aftermarket modifications made to this car and it still includes a period correct Becker Grand Prix cassette radio, however it’s been updated to include Bluetooth connectivity. The car rides on a set of period 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. This car was manufactured new by BMW in Munich and its bodywork was completed by Karmann in Osnabruck, Germany. It’s an Australian-delivered example which has been upgraded with a BMW five-speed manual transmission.

Its engine has also been fully rebuilt with triple Weber carburettors. Exterior condition is in excellent order for its age and mileage. The blue paint appears with good reflections and its metallic accents flake nicely in the sunlight. It appears as though the paintwork could use a detail to remove light scratches and holograms. Chrome trim is polished to a high shine. Light weathering is seen to exterior rubbers and plastics, as expected for a vehicle of its age.

All four wheels show in perfect condition without noticeable kerb rash and the tyres appear near new. The interior condition presents similarly well. The door cards and carpeting was replaced by Melbourne Auto Upholstery in 2022, while the tan leather upholstery holds its shape without creasing. Light wear and tear is seen on touch points such as the hand brake, gear selector, and some instrumentation. Trim work of the dash and woodgrain inlays is in very impressive condition. All accompanying documentation will be supplied with this car.
