This 1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 has been modified into a custom street cruiser, complete with a built 350ci V8 engine and an overhauled interior and exterior. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 350 cubic-inch (5.7L) V8 engine which sent 190kW (255hp) to the rear wheels when new, though this example has been heavily modified. The car is now fitted with a three-speed automatic transmission. The odometer currently displays 24,929 miles. When Ford achieved considerable success through the 1960s with its ground-breaking Mustang sports coupe, it was only inevitable that Pontiac would respond with a muscle car of its own. The product is the Pontiac Firebird which rolled into American showrooms in 1967 and shared a platform with the Chevrolet Camaro. They were a prime example of the oft-repeated phrase “There’s no replacement for displacement”.

The Firebird Formula variant was first introduced in 1970 and was offered with plenty of options available on the Trans Am. Outright horsepower is not all the Firebird has going for it – it is renowned for having excellent on-road manners and the eye-catching looks are hard not to appreciate. Even though this is now a 50-year-old car, the Firebird remains a great car to drive and well-sorted examples like this command respect. This bespoke build is characterised by orange paint with black stripes, while the interior is from a Honda Prelude and is upholstered in black and orange, too. There are myriad modifications to this car, including new sequential tail-lights, billet bonnet hinges, custom braces, Pontiac script rocker covers, chrome sill moulds, a Momo steering wheel, and a set of 17-/18-inch US Mags Rambler wheels wrapped in Pirelli/Hilo Vantage tyres. The vehicle spent the majority of its life in the United States before being imported to Australia in 2016. From there, a nut-and-bolt restoration took place addressing the mechanics, cosmetics, and overall presentation of the car.

The car was previously red before being sent to Bribie Kustom to be repainted. No major rust was found in the bare-metal painting process. Steve’s Trims in Bundaberg completed the interior overhaul in 2019. Its engine was completely rebuilt by RLD Engine in 2018. It now features flat-top pistons, Elgin lifters, new bearings, Edelbrock intake manifold and 600 EFM carb with electronic choke, HEI distributor, and a new custom exhaust by Fat Pipes at Kallangur. Externally, the car presents in cared-for condition with no obvious points of damage or wear. The orange paintwork is finished to a high standard and no imperfections are seen.

The chrome rear bumper displays in good order and its various badges appear without tarnishing. Ram Air intakes sit proud of the bonnet and no scratches are seen in the black stripes. The chrome wheels are polished to a shine, though some kerb rash is noted around the rims. This Firebird displays in great condition on the inside, too. The heavily bolstered seats show no signs of stain, crease marking, or wear. Similarly, the redone rear bench seat appears in good order. There is some flaking trim noted around the aftermarket head unit, though the carbon-effect trim around the gauges appears in good condition.
