This 1973 Land Rover Series III 88” is a surviving example which presents a striking opportunity to enter classic Land Rover ownership. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated six-cylinder Holden petrol engine which sends its power to all four wheels. The gearbox in this example is a four-speed manual with dual-range gearing. The odometer of this car currently displays 18,718km. The original Land Rovers are commonly referred to as Series Land Rovers to distinguish from later models. As a model it was first introduced in the aftermath of the second World War. Although it was similar in design and intent to a Willys Jeep (which was used throughout the war), the Land Rover became notable for its agricultural use and quickly became a farmhand’s best friend.

However, it didn’t take long for the militaries of the world to take interest in the Land Rover. Australian-made Land Rover Series 1, 2, and 3 were widely used by Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force. They now represent an approachable way into Land Rover ownership. Finished in requisite polyurethane desert-shade paint with a khaki vinyl canopy, this Land Rover Series III looks straight out of army surplus. This specification is the 88-inch wheelbase variant and features practical equipment such as a fuel can, bonnet-mounted axe, and shovel. Inside the cabin this car features turquoise seats, Uniden CB radios, and floor mats.

It rides on a set of 16-inch wheels with Simex Centipede all-terrain tyres. This Land Rover was manufactured in Australia and complied in July 1973. It has been owned by the same family since 2005. Over the past 20 years the car has been serviced by the owner and then by the Brake Place in Mitcham, VIC. It has not been driven for several years, however it was recommissioned in November last year. This included a new battery, new fuel pump, and new starter motor.

At some point the engine has been swapped for a six-cylinder Holden motor. The seller notes some oil leaks, but is unsure whether these were rectified in the recommissioning. On the outside this car displays in honest condition. The paintwork appears without flaking or obvious tarnish, though there is significant denting and damage to panels. The khaki tonneau canopy shows no tears or stains and pulls taut over the frame without sag. There is some minor kerb rash seen on the wheels, and surface rust is beginning to appear on its underside.

Interior-wise, this Land Rover shows in fair order for its age. The seat upholstery shows no overt tears or sagging. However, wear and tear is noted around instruments and switchgear. There is no major damage seen on the dash or door cards. The seats in the troop compartment display is worse condition, though still hold a good shape. Paint scuffs and flaking is seen on paintwork on the tailgate.

No major marks are seen on the headlining. This car will come with manuals and documentation, plus spare parts and tools.
