This 1973 Datsun 240Z is an Australian-delivered, matching-numbers example that has recently completed a concourse restoration. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre inline-six-cylinder engine that outputs 113kW and 198Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The car displays 52,398 miles on its odometer. In the late 1960s, Datsun was desperate for its own sports car to compete with the likes of the Jaguar E-Type, Alfa Romeo Spider, and MGB.

Those cars enjoyed commercial success beyond their home markets and sold in big numbers to Japanese buyers. Following an extensive development phase, the Datsun 240Z (also known as the Nissan S30, Nissan Fairlady Z, and the Nissan Z) was unveiled in 1969 showing sleek styling, a strong straight-six engine, and independent suspension at every corner. These were not typical attributes for a Japanese car, which were thought of as dull “white goods” products, so the Datsun 240Z made quite the impression at its debut. It continued to win fans for its relative low price, while the impressive performance was often deployed on racetracks around the world. Today, the Nissan Z spirit lives on in a current-generation model, while early cars such as this one are quickly becoming must-have classics.

Finished in its original colour combination including red paintwork and black vinyl upholstery, this Nissan 240Z stays true to its heritage. The interior is highlighted by matching woodgrain for the steering wheel and gear selector. It now equips Koni inserts in the front struts and has undergone a thorough driveline rebuild. A set of 15-inch Performance alloy wheels is wrapped in Maxxis tyres. This Datsun was complied in Australia in July 1973 and was delivered new to Victoria.

The current owner purchased the car out of a Queensland auction approximately five years ago. It was noted that there was no major rust, nor big repairs, but the current owner underwent a thorough restoration anyway. This included a full rotisserie repaint in its original colour, new interior trim in the original diamond pattern, a reskinned dashboard, new seat belts, and new door cards. It also received new bushes, new front rotors/pads, new rear brake shoes, the radiator and heat core repaired, and the fuel tank was cleaned and re-lined. The matching-numbers engine and gearbox were rebuilt by Z Shop.

With a recent respray, this car’s exterior condition is immaculate. The red paintwork shows no signs of imperfection on any panels, while the chrome exterior trims and bumpers are polished to a shine. The original badges are present and appear with no obvious patina. The undercarriage and engine bay have been repainted with impressive detail. No kerb rash damage is seen on the wheels.

Inside, this car’s cabin shows in fine order throughout. The black vinyl upholstery displays in good condition without scuffs or stains, while no creases are seen in the bolsters. Likewise, carpeting in the front and rear compartments shows without damage or stains. The dashboard, central tunnel, and steering wheel all appear in good condition without notable wear and tear. This car will come with all accompanying documents and service history.
