This 1973 BMW (E9) 3.0 CS is an ex-Gosford Classic Car Museum display piece that benefits from a full restoration. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine that outputs 134kW (180hp). Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic gearbox. The odometer of this BMW currently displays 93,380km. BMW was a changed company in the 1960s thanks largely to this car and the wider Neue Klasse line-up. The wave of new models turned BMW’s dire financial woes around and it reinvigorated the German car-maker’s dwindling market share.

Not only did Neue Klasse introduce a series of new body styles, engines, and technology, but plenty of the key styling attributes are still used in BMW’s models today. The most desirable model is the swoopy E9 coupe with its long bonnet, powerful engine options and dynamic ability. Six-cylinder cars like the 3.0 CS are particularly sought after thanks to the iconic M30 straight-six engine and the alluring Karmann-designed bodywork. It’s rare to see one on the racetrack these days, but the E9 was used in countless motorsports categories and is likely the reason that BMW is renowned for building some of the world’s best sports cars. Painted in striking Inca Orange and upholstered with black vinyl trim, this BMW E9 still turns heads, even today. The exterior is highlighted by chrome trim, while the cabin features orange seat piping and woodgrain inserts for the dash.

The owner describes the car as having no aftermarket modifications. However, it does feature an aftermarket Alpine head unit and an upgraded sound system. It continues to run on a set of period-correct 14-inch wheels wrapped in Goodride tyres. Originally left hand drive, this car was assembled by BMW in Munich and the body was hand-built by Karmann in Osnabruck, Germany. The current owner purchased the vehicle from the Gosford Classic Car Museum collection via Lloyds Auction in April 2019 and has only added 3500km to the odometer since then. According to the owner, it had a full restoration and respray prior to his purchase. It has been showcased at various BMW club events.

The owner states that the car is serviced twice annually (the most recent was two months ago) at Bee-Ems in Hornsby, NSW. Recent maintenance included an overhaul of the brakes. It is said to run in brilliant condition. The exterior presentation of this E9 appears in excellent order. The resprayed Inca Orange paintwork displays flawlessly on the car and holds good reflections in the sunlight. Even the chrome trim appears with a bright shine. No marks of scuffing or scratches are noted on the bumpers, grille, or light lenses.

Each of the four wheels is displayed in great condition without obvious kerb rash. Inside the interior, the overall presentation of this E9 remains in great condition. The black seats show no deformation and there is no sign of scuffing or scratching in the fabric. The orange pinstriping is unbroken. Normal signs of use are identified around the switchgear and dash instrumentation. The carpeting and floor mats appear to be in good condition, as do the woodgrain dash and door panel inserts. All accompanying documentation will be supplied with this car’s sale.
