This 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Cobra Jet is a special piece of American muscle car history presenting in restored condition and featuring unique options from new. Power is supplied by a naturally-aspirated 428 cubic inch (7.0-litre) R-Code V8 engine which produces 268kW (360hp). Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Cruise-o-matic automatic transmission. The odometer of this car currently displays 1,936 miles. As the end of the 1960s neared and the iconic, first-generation Ford Mustang and was beginning to show its age, Ford developed the Mach 1 sub-range of Mustang variants to reinvigorate the model and capture new buyer attention. The engine compartment was enlarged to house the Detroit manufacturer’s biggest-block engines, suspension upgrades were made to cope with the extra power, and the wheel track was widened.

Visual changes also pointed to the car’s performance nature, including a matte black bonnet treatment, bonnet tie-down pins, Shaker bonnet scoop, rear deck spoiler, and rear window louvres. The Ford Mustang Mach 1 became so successful in its own right, Ford decided to discontinue the Mustang GT. These days, early 1969 models are hard to come by and pristine examples command premiums on the used market. This car is painted in Poppy Green, a unique colour offered as part of a Ford dealership campaign in the United States. It specifies a deluxe interior upholstered with black vinyl and fabric trim. From new, the car was optioned with the Shaker-style bonnet scoop, Traction-Lok 3.

5:1 differential, front disc brakes, power steering, and push-button AM radio. The car retains its original colour combination and no notable aftermarket modifications are listed. It rides on a set of 15-inch wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich radial tyres. Built new by Ford in San Jose, California in June 1969 and delivered new to Russ Davis Ford in California, this Mach 1 has a well-documented history. It was owned by the original purchaser until 1989, where it was then imported to Australia and used on occasion. Its third owner in 2001 commissioned a nut-and-bolt restoration to “concours-grade” condition using new original parts.

The car has been presented with the Gosford Car Museum and shows extensive documentation of its original build data. The exterior of this Ford Mustang Mach 1 shows in incredible order, considering its thorough restoration and museum-worthy status. The Poppy Green paintwork displays in excellent order throughout with no endemic imperfections, though consistent swirl markings indicate it could benefit from a detail. Exterior chrome trim is polished to a shine and black decals present in undamaged condition. The car no longer wears its original deck lid spoiler. All four wheels display in fine order without kerb rash damage.

Inside the cabin this car has been well taken care of. There is next to no wear and tear on the vinyl and fabric seats and no signs of staining or scuffs are noticed on the carpeting. Original woodgrain trims are in fine condition, as is the steering wheel, dashboard, and instrumentation. The car even retains its factory-specific Goodyear Polyglas spare tyre. Supplied with the car is documentation including restoration receipts, manuals, magazine clippings, original brochures, and its factory build sheet.
