This 1959 Volkswagen Kombi (T1) Split Screen is a restored and presented example of one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced, finished in a striking brown and off-white two-tone colour scheme. It is powered by an aircooled 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently reads 50,054 miles* TMU.
The Volkswagen Kombi needs little introduction. Conceived in post-war Germany and brought to production in 1950, the T1 Transporter became one of the most recognisable vehicles in automotive history, adopted the world over as a symbol of adventure, freedom, and utility. The split-screen windscreen, so named for the distinctive divided front glass, was a defining feature of the first-generation Kombi produced through to 1967, and it is this variant that commands the greatest affection and the strongest collector values today. Genuine, well-presented split-screen examples are increasingly scarce globally, and their appeal shows no sign of diminishing.
This Kombi is finished in brown over off-white two-tone paintwork and presents in very good condition throughout. The interior has been fully retrimmed in tan leather, featuring L-shaped seating in the rear cabin and matching door and wall panels. An upgraded Focal speaker sound system with integrated power pack and solar charging capability has been fitted. A period-style chrome roof rack is fitted to the exterior. The original side indicators are no longer present, representing the only notable omission from an otherwise well-presented example.
Complied in February 1959, this Kombi is understood to have been restored by Paul Williams in Johannesburg, South Africa, with work including a full respray, complete interior retrim, and a rebuild of the 1.6-litre aircooled engine and gearbox. The vehicle was acquired by the current owner in December 2024 and imported to Australia, arriving in June 2025. Following importation, the vehicle was presented to Vaucluse Auto for a comprehensive inspection, from which both a pink slip and blue slip were obtained. During this inspection, a new starter motor, flywheel, and brake work were carried out, ensuring the vehicle is mechanically sound and ready to use. The Kombi is now registered on historic plates and all keys are supplied.
The bodywork of this Kombi presents in very good condition. The brown and off-white two-tone paintwork displays a good depth of shine with no major damage identified. Chrome detailing, including the front VW emblem, bumpers, and mirrors, presents in polished condition. All wheels present with their period-style chrome hubcaps and white wall tyres, without notable damage.
The interior presents beautifully. Tan leather upholstery covers the L-shaped rear seating and presents without scuffs or wear. Wall panels and headlining are in very good order. The Focal sound system and speaker installation are neatly integrated into the lower cabin panels.
This Volkswagen Kombi will be supplied with all keys and its current historic vehicle registration. Supporting documentation from the Vaucluse Auto inspection is also available.
