This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Coupe (W128) is an Australian delivered example and is presented as a matching numbers car supported by its original data card and documentation. It is powered by a 2.2 litre naturally aspirated inline six with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, producing 85 kW (115 hp), paired with a column shifted four speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The odometer currently shows 81,041 miles* TMU.

Produced between 1958 and 1960, the W128 220 SE represented the final development of Mercedes-Benz’s Ponton generation and introduced Bosch mechanical fuel injection to the range. The 220 SE Coupe was considerably rarer than the saloon, with 830 coupes produced worldwide. This example is reported to be one of approximately 10 delivered new to Australia, while fewer than 50 right hand drive coupes are understood to have been produced. Its body number is recorded as 0001, which is understood to indicate that it was among the first right hand drive 220 SE Coupes produced in 1959.

Originally finished in Light Blue and Crème, codes 356 and 439, the car was repainted in its current darker shade of blue during the late 1980s, with selected panels receiving further paintwork more recently. The exterior is complemented by extensive chrome trim and 13 inch steel wheels with body coloured centre caps, fitted with Maxxis MA-1 whitewall tyres. The cabin is trimmed in Crème leather with refurbished timber detailing and English Wilton carpeting, following a comprehensive interior refurbishment completed in 2020.

Delivered new through Merna Motors in Sydney, the car is accompanied by its original service book, handbooks, brochures and factory data card. More than $120,000 is reported to have been spent on restoration and maintenance over an eight year period, including rebuilding the clutch and transmission, reconditioning the starter motor, brake booster and master cylinder, replacing engine mounts, tie rod ends and brake shoes, servicing the fuel tank, fitting a reconditioned original fuel pump and replacing numerous seals and rubber components. A genuine Mercedes-Benz windscreen was also fitted. The most recent recorded service was completed in October 2022, with further maintenance including an oil change carried out since.

The seller describes the bodywork as presenting well for its age, with the darker blue paint retaining a strong finish while showing some areas of age related blemishing. The chrome trim is reported to present well, while the refurbished interior features Crème leather upholstery, restored timber trim and Wilton carpeting.

Included with the vehicle is a comprehensive documentation folder containing the original service books, manuals, factory data card, maintenance records, invoices and receipts for work completed, together with period magazine material, an original jack and tool roll.
