This 1949 MG TC is finished in Sequoia Cream over a green leather interior and shows 14,901 miles indicated. One of the most recognisable post-war British sports cars, the TC played a pivotal role in introducing lightweight open-top motoring to international markets and remains an enduring symbol of early MG design.
Introduced in 1945, the MG TC was developed from the pre-war TB and featured subtle mechanical improvements alongside familiar styling cues such as separate guards, a folding windscreen and exposed running gear. Its simple construction, lively performance and engaging driving experience made it especially popular with returning servicemen, particularly in export markets. Today, the TC is celebrated as a cornerstone of MG’s sporting heritage and a true entry point into classic British motoring.
The current owner acquired the car in August 2021 from South Australia. While earlier ownership details are not known, the car has been used sparingly since acquisition and maintained with a focus on mechanical reliability and preservation rather than cosmetic overhaul.
Servicing since purchase has been carried out by The Morris Minor Garage in Moorabbin, Victoria, specialists in British vehicles of this era. The most recent full service was completed in February 2025. Prior to the current ownership, the car benefited from significant mechanical work including a rebuilt engine that is still being run in. The rebuild included new pistons and rings, big end and main bearings, a Newman fast road camshaft with lifters and springs, resurfaced cylinder head with TF valves, porting work and an estimated compression ratio of approximately 9:1.
Chassis-related work included sealed rear axle bearings with an axle seal kit, new 16 inch tyres and tubes, sandblasted and refinished wheels, rear brake machining and relining with new seals, and LED lighting fitted front and rear. The gearbox has previously been rebuilt and a new clutch plate, radiator and spin-on oil filter have also been fitted. A new battery was installed recently.
The exterior presents as an older restoration with an honest and usable appearance. The Sequoia Cream paintwork shows a number of minor blemishes consistent with age and use, though the overall presentation remains tidy. The car is supplied with full weather equipment including hood, side screens and a full tonneau cover, all of which are in very good condition. Brightwork, trim and fittings present consistently with an older restored example.
Inside, the green leather interior shows some age, as expected, but remains intact and serviceable. The cabin retains its period character, with upholstery, trim and instrumentation presenting in keeping with the car’s age and use.
Mechanically, the car performs very well for its age and specification. The owner reports no issues in meeting Victorian roadworthy requirements. The engine is described as strong and tractable, benefiting from its fast road specification while retaining the character of the original drivetrain. Finned front brake drums are available but not currently fitted.
The MG TC is supplied with what appears to be an original tool kit, along with a workshop manual, restoration guide, original operating manual and lubrication guides.
As per Trading Garage Terms and Conditions, although Trading Garage has completed the following checks, bidders must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of the description and carry out any research they feel necessary before bidding.
