2018 Porsche 917K Replica



This Porsche 917K replica is a faithful recreation of a motorsports legend. It is powered by 3.6-litre flat-six engine from a 964 Carrera which outputs 184kW and 310Nm to the rear wheels. It’s fitted with a four-speed manual transmission from a 930 Turbo. Since its completion in 2019, it has only travelled 60km.



Porsche’s dominant motorsport history begins with the 917 prototype which was designed to compete – and win – at Le Mans in 1970. And that it did, winning the classic Le Mans 24-hour endurance race twice (in 1970 and 1971). It was designed by Porsche legend Hans Mezger under the supervision of Ferdinand Piech and featured a number of firsts for Porsche including a 12-cylinder engine, titanium and magnesium componentry, and a new spaceframe chassis weighing just 43kg. In 1971 Porsche developed the 917K, the model on which this replica is based, which used a cleaner, short-tail body design that allowed a higher top speed.



This car wears the iconic Gulf Wyer colour scheme which adorned the original 917 race car. It equips bucket seats finished in red fabric, a removable Momo Prototipo steering wheel, Sabelt racing harnesses, security system and aluminium race pedals. It uses body mouldings taken from a real 917 and was engineered by qualified motor engineer Kyle Clarkson. This 917K replica can raise its nose with a hydraulic front lift system and is fitted with Wilwood brakes (six pot fronts, four pot rears). The ADR-approved chassis was tested four times beyond requirements and the cockpit is a monocoque shell welded to the tig welded chassis.



The car was built from a kit purchased from Race Car Replicas in the USA in 2014. It was completed in 2019 and subsequently ADR approved and registered in 2020. It has travelled just 60km since it was finished. The engine was sourced from a Porsche 964, rebuilt and compression tested. The 930 Turbo-derived four-speed transmission was also refurbished throughout the build.



Exterior condition is described as great, with no marks or stone chips damaging the Standox paints. This 917K replica sports a set of 15-inch wheels finished in matte black which are currently wrapped in mix of tyres including Pirellis and Yokohamas ­– all are near-new and have a great amount of tread remaining. It wears the #20 number of Porsche’s 1970 entry and a comprehensive sticker pack includes Bosch, Gulf, Shell, Champion, Firestone and Standox logos.



The stripped-out interior features a set of red cloth bucket seats with Sabelt racing harnesses, leather panel coverings, two fire extinguishers and a series of functional gauges. Every part of the interior is in great condition considering the car’s occasional use.



Mechanical condition is said to be excellent. The car comes with a large set of spares including a set of four Avon historic race tyres, bolt-in cockpit roll bar and a spare unused windscreen. The car will come with its own hydraulically operated trailer.
