2001 Mazda RX-7 Type R Bathurst R

This 2001 Mazda RX-7 Bathurst R (FD) is a late-run unmolested JDM classic which represents great buying for a collection, or as a basis for modification. It is powered by a twin-turbocharged 1.3-litre twin-rotor 13B engine which outputs 206kW/314Nm. This power is fed to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer of this car currently shows 118,290km.

Where early Mazda RX-7s were notable for their affordability and value, the FD generation RX-7 was all about performance. It was the first Japanese car to feature sequential twin-turbochargers and focused on weight savings compared to its predecessors. Early FD RX-7s didn’t sell particularly well in Australia due to Mazda’s sizeable price increase over the Series 5 cars and the lack of choice in the range was a detractor. But the RX-7’s performance was undeniable both on-track and on-road. Several special editions were rolled out towards the end of the model’s run such as this Bathurst R (one of 650). As the third and final model in the RX-7 timeline, the FD is the last of its kind and it’s unlikely such a performance car will be built by Mazda again.

This Mazda RX-7 is painted Pure White and features a black cloth interior. This car comes remarkably unmodified, save for an aftermarket head unit and a catback exhaust which can be easily removed. As a Bathurst R special edition this RX-7 was fitted with adjustable dampers, a carbon fibre shifter, carbon fibre interior trim, special fog lamps and a different handbrake. This car specifically was optioned with aluminium sill plates, mud guards, and a centre arm rest. The car rides on a set of 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tyres.

Built new in November 2001 and delivered within the Japanese market, this RX-7 is now a four-owner car since new. The car was imported to Australia and complied by the seller in late 2021 as a Grade 4 car. It has been further enhanced with bits and pieces such as new headlight covers, repainted strut brace, repainted mud guards, replaced power steering components, replaced rear pillow bushes, and new windscreen moulds. The last service was completed after the car was imported locally, which included new fluids and an AC regas. It has also passed a compression test.

Having recently been detailed inside and out, this RX-7’s exterior presentation is extremely clean. Pure White paintwork displays in great order with no noticeable imperfections, while exterior trim pieces are clean of any mark damage. Minor scrape and stone chip damage is seen on the front splitter but this is considered normal use. All four wheels show without kerb rash and the Bridgestone tyres show a good amount of tread remaining.

Inside the cabin this car shows in immaculate order. The seats show no stains or tear marks and no signs of stress damage are seen on bolsters. Carbon trim elements show in great condition and the car’s leather trimmings display without wear and tear. The side sills do show scuff damage consistent with use. Carpeting is clean of any staining.

This car will come with a suite of supporting documentation including importation files, original stereo head unit, cat-back exhaust, service manuals, receipts, and spare keys. The personalised plates are not included in the sale.
