1998 Subaru Impreza STi 22B
This 1998 Subaru WRX STI 22B presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the all-time great Subarus, with this example being kept in remarkable unmodified condition since new. It is powered by a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which sends 206kW/360Nm to all four wheels. This example is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission. It currently displays 121,828km on its odometer.
No other Subaru is quite as iconic as the WRX STI 22B. As with so many other legendary cars, the 22B was born out of motorsport success to celebrate Subaru’s third consecutive World Rally Championship and to mark the brand’s 40th anniversary. A very limited production run was organised with 400 models delivered new to home market Japan, while 25 others were shipped to other worldwide markets for special people, such as the legendary Colin McRae. All were painted in Subaru’s rally-spec blue, and featured unique bodywork including enlarged fenders, vented bonnet, WRC-inspired front bumper, adjustable rear wing, Bilstein suspension, and special BBS alloy wheels. Some suggest the car’s officially-listed 206kW outputs were undervalued, with real power being somewhat higher. The WRX STI 22B comes up for sale rarely and are hugely desirable, fitting perfectly into the 90s JDM hall of fame.
Finished in the only colour specification of Sonic Blue Mica with a black-and-blue upholstered interior, this example (#204 of 400) contains no aftermarket modifications to take away from its originality. It does specify an Alpine head unit has been added. The car rides on a set of its original 17-inch BBS gold alloy wheels with red brake calipers underneath. Tyres currently fitted to this car are Pirelli P Zeros.
First delivered new to Japan and subsequently imported to Australia, this car’s paperwork documents a regular service history completed using genuine Subaru/STI parts. The current owner has held the vehicle since 2015 doing regular checks and maintenance in his own workshop. It has an upgraded genuine Subaru hi-flow air filter and its last major service was completed in 2019 where the timing belt was replaced. It was professionally detailed earlier this year and mechanical items were checked-over.
This car’s exterior presentation is fantastic and shows how well it’s been cared for. The Sonic Blue paintwork is in flawless order, showing no marks or scratches while reflecting nicely in the light. The seller notes repainting of the underside of the front bar and side skirts due to wear and tear. All exterior trims and parts display in excellent order without obvious wear and tear, especially considering the vehicle’s age and mileage. The four wheels show no signs of curb rash and tyres retain a good amount of tread depth.
Interior-wise, the car shows in similarly immaculate order. There are no major signs of wear and tear identified on the car’s hard-wearing fabrics. The car’s plastics and dashboard contain no scratching or cracking, but the seller notes a small scratch on the centre console lid and passenger’s door trim. Seats retain a factory-original shape without deforming, though there is minor wear to the driver’s seat belt. Carpeting and instrumentation appears in great condition as do items like the factory Nardi steering wheel.
This car will come with a suite of original delivery books and service manuals.
