1998 Porsche (986) Boxster
This 1998 Porsche Boxster (986) is a clean example of Porsche’s first-generation Boxster and presents in a tidy specification. It is powered by a 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine outputting 150kW/260Nm to the rear wheels. This car is fitted with the five-speed automatic transmission and can run from zero to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds. It currently shows 102,164km on its odometer.
The Porsche Boxster is widely regarded as the car that saved Porsche from takeover through the 1990s, and while that’s partly true (the Cayenne SUV also played a part), the Boxster featured a great many of its parts with the 996-generation 911. Since its launch, the Boxster has been consistently held as one of the best bang-for-buck driving experiences, combining Porsche’s famed dynamics with a stylish mid-engined, soft-top body style. It is fact that the Boxster shared development with the 996, which only benefits the Boxster.
Presenting in a classy, subdued black-over-tan leather colour combination, this Boxster also features a black soft-top roof to tie-in the combination. Under a set of five-spoke 17-inch silver alloy wheels lies a set of repainted yellow calipers. The car is currently running a set of Bridgestone Potenza tyres and features an Alpine head unit in place of the original.
Delivered new to Australia and complied late in 1998, this Boxster has enjoyed regular servicing and care throughout its life. Servicing has been completed through official Porsche outlets as well as Porsche specialists. Its last maintenance was completed by Hawthorn Automotive Improvements in July 2021. Importantly, the IMS bearing issue plaguing early Porsche Boxsters has been sorted on this car.
Exterior condition is described as very good – it has kept in respectable shape considering the car’s age. There are some minor marks to the car’s paintwork and attached trim pieces, though the car is largely devoid of damage and the black paint shines and reflects nicely. The black soft-top roof pulls taut and the fabric presents in good order. Some minor curb damage can be seen on the wheels, gracing the face and lip of the wheels. Bridgestone Potenza tyres show a good amount of tread depth remaining.
The interior of this Boxster is in remarkable order for its age. The tan leather upholstery retains its original shape and shows minimal cracking, while the sand-coloured carpets look to be mostly clean and unmarked. Some minor creasing can be seen on the bolsters of the seats. Black leather trimming and plastic accents tie in nicely with the wider interior specification. All interior functionality works as normal including the electric roof.
A series of original service manuals and booklets will be supplied with the car. Two keys and the spare wheel are also included.
