1996 Mercedes-Benz (R129) SL280

This 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL280 is an Australian-delivered example which has had just three owners since new, and is offered with a fully-serviced history. Under the bonnet is a naturally-aspirated 2.8-litre inline-six-cylinder which produces 142kW (190hp). This power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic gearbox. This vehicle currently displays 155,136km on its odometer.

As one of its longest-running nameplates the SL typifies what it means to be a Mercedes-Benz. The model line began with the 300SL in the 1950s and continues today under Mercedes-AMG’s stewardship. Blending an iconic profile design with a proper open-top experience it was – and still is – the car to have when it comes to luxury grand touring. However, it’s also a sharp driving experience with a series of powerful engines under the bonnet and a nimble handling character. The cabin has always been fitted with luxurious fittings and materials, but the R129 introduced a series of electronic action items such as electric windows, mirrors, seats and hydraulic convertible top. The Australian market only offered the SL280 variant for a shortened period. The R129 is viewed as a high point of the SL lineage and well-kept examples are beginning to rise in value.

Painted in Zircon Silver and upholstered with a grey leather interior, this SL’s specification looks refreshingly simple. The owner notes the vehicle is completely original and shows no aftermarket modifications aside from an updated head unit. While it currently wears its soft-top roof, this car does have a hard-top which will be included with the sale. It rides on a set of 16-inch wheels wrapped in Sailun tyres.

Built new in Germany and delivered new to Australia through Mercedes-Benz Toorak, this SL is now a three-owner car since new. The current owner came to buy this car out of Richmond’s in South Australia. It has a service history through Mercedes dealerships and Mercedes specialists. No items of concern were raised and the owner notes the vehicle runs in great condition.

Also standing in great condition is this vehicle’s bodywork. There are no obvious marks of damage to the silver paint, while the finish reflects sunlight nicely. Minor scratches and cracks are seen on the lower front splitter and paint transfer is seen on the rear right bumper. The soft-top roof is in good condition overall and functions normally, though subtle wear and tear is noticeable. The four wheels appear in good condition but minor kerb rash is seen, while the tyres retain a good amount of tread.

Interior condition appears to be in good order, though finer points of wear are seen. The upholstery shows in great shape without sag, but the leather shows minor discolouration. Carpets and woodgrain inlays show in good order, though the door cards have wear and tear damage especially around touch points.

This car will come with a suite of original documentation including original service books and an alloy spare wheel.
