1995 Mercedes-Benz (R129) SL500
This 1995 Mercedes-Benz SL500 (R129) is an Australian-delivered car which presents in a tidy specification. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine which outputs 240kW (322hp) to the rear wheels. This powertrain is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission in this example. The odometer of this car currently shows 189,272km.
The R129-generation Mercedes-Benz SL was introduced in 1989 and was manufactured until its replacement came along in 2001. It features an iconic Bruno Sacco design which is highlighted by angular creases and a classic roadster profile shape. It was offered as a two-door, two-seat roadster which featured a hydraulically-folding roof – but was also available with a fixed roof which owners could place over the soft-top’s tonneau. It was uniquely able to appear as a fixed-roof and soft-top car depending on the owner’s tastes. Aside from the hard-to-acquire SL600, the SL500 was the flagship variant of the SL-Class and featured innovative equipment such as adaptive dampers. The level of standard equipment was high (for the time), with electric mirrors, windows, seats, and a hydraulic soft-top.
This car’s neat look is highlighted by grey paintwork on the exterior and specifies a black leather-upholstered interior. No obvious aftermarket modifications are listed along with this car – its original delivery specification is preserved. The interior is accented by woodgrain trim and the bodywork’s Sacco planks are a subtly-lighter shade of grey. The car rides on a set of original 16-inch Mercedes wheels wrapped in Continental tyres.
Built in May 1995 and delivered new to Australia later that year, this SL500 has enjoyed regular maintenance through official Mercedes-Benz outlets and specialist independents. The current owner purchased the vehicle late last year and replaced items including the catalytic converter and tyres, while repairing bits such as the roof’s hydraulic seals and the steering wheel. The most recent service was carried out less than 500km ago in March 2022. The owner states the vehicle runs very smoothly and everything works as it should, aside from the air conditioning which could be colder with a re-gas.
The exterior presentation of this R129 shows in good order. The paintwork is in excellent condition for the vehicle’s age and mileage, with complete panels showing minimal swirl marks. The car has just received a professional detail. The front bar and bonnet have been resprayed, though the rear bar shows some paint blemishes. Very minor curb rash can be seen on some rims, though nothing overtly noticeable. The tyres are near-new with a deep level of tread depth.
Interior condition is described as fair. The leather seats do show some small signs of creasing and wear but have been repaired where stitching was coming undone. The steering wheel has recently been refurbished and appears like new. Woodgrain trim, the car’s dashboard, and the carpeting all display in good condition. All instrumentation and gauges function as normal.
Service receipts, the owner’s manual, a tool kit and the original spare wheel is supplied with this vehicle.
