1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5 - 16 Cosworth

This 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 is a rarefied homologation special and features a smart silver colour combination. Under the bonnet is a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine which outputs 150kW (201hp) to the rear wheels. This car is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer of this vehicle currently displays 80,427 miles.

A true homologation special, the storied Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 takes the ordinary W201 190E and turns it into a proper sports car. The story begins with Mercedes wanting to take the W201 rallying. It asked British engineering firm Cosworth to develop an engine to take racing, though both outfits quickly discovered the car was outclassed by the all-wheel-drive equipped Audi Quattro. Mercedes then turned towards the DTM category instead which required a road-going model for homologation purposes. A detuned Cosworth engine was fitted to the road counterpart. Mercedes enlarged the engine later in the car’s life from 2.3 litres to 2.5, which is equipped to the car you see here. The car never officially came to Australia but it remains an incredibly important car worldwide – without this car, there would be no BMW E30 M3.

This car presents with an Astral Silver specification and is upholstered with black leather inside. No obvious aftermarket additions take away from its original specification, though the car is fitted with a factory sunroof and heated front seats. It rides on a set of 15-inch ‘Gullideckel’ wheels painted in silver, which come wrapped in Bridgestone tyres.

Built new in Germany in 1990 and delivered new to the United Kingdom, this car has since travelled through New Zealand and is now in Australia. It was imported to New Zealand in 1994 and first registered in the country with 70,000 miles on the odometer. The car relocated to Australia in 2019 where it was shipped to Melbourne. The seller notes the car is in immaculate original condition, with its servicing up to date and a roadworthy certificate to its name. It will soon be featured in Unique Cars magazine.

This 190E Cosworth’s exterior presentation shows in excellent order throughout. The Astral Silver paintwork appears with nice reflections in the light, while next to no signs of paint damage are seen. The bumper plastics show some minor marks, described as commensurate with the car’s use, as does the car’s grey plastics on the mirrors and door handles. All exterior add-ons such as the spoiler and body kit display in good condition. All four wheels are complete in good condition with no curb rash, while the tyres are in near-new condition.

Interior condition displays similarly well. The black leather upholstery shows without obvious marking and few signs of fabric distress are seen. The car’s woodgrain trim inserts also appear undamaged. Dashboard trim and door cards all appear without obvious wear, while the carpeting is clean. All instrumentation and the factory sunroof work as normal.
