1988 Mercedes-Benz (W124) 300E AMG

This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300E (W124) is a keenly-presented original Australian-delivered vehicle which has been upgraded to visual AMG specification. It is powered by a 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated inline-six-cylinder engine which outputs 138kW/260Nm to the rear wheels. It is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission in this example. The odometer currently shows 265,890km.

Predating what we know today as the E-Class is the W124-generation of Mercedes-Benzes. It was the German marque’s large executive car, in period, which neatly slotted between the W201 entry-level models and the flagship S-Class. The W124 featured a series of new technologies for Mercedes-Benz that have since become commonplace for the brand and was one of the most aerodynamic models on the market at the time. The model is also known for being overengineered, with its intricate single windscreen wiper and remote-folding rear headrests. Before AMG was integrated within Mercedes-Benz itself, the aftermarket tuning company provided unique styling kits and engine upgrades to Bruno Sacco-designed Benzes. These pre-merger AMG cars are in high demand due to their iconic 80s design.

This vehicle epitomises the pre-merger AMG aesthetic with a full AMG body kit and rear wing. The car shows in a neat blue colour on the outside which is mirrored inside the cabin with blue leather upholstery. In addition to the body kit this W124 is fitted with remote central locking, a rear subwoofer, Kenwood stereo system, and AMG exhaust tips. No engine modifications are listed. The seller notes the body kit is a mix of genuine items and period correct re-makes. The car currently rides on a set of period correct 16-inch Borbet Type A wheels and H&R lowering springs.

Built new in Germany in September 1988 and complied in Australia in October 1988, this vehicle was delivered new as a 300E sedan. The current owner purchased the vehicle in 2018 and began sourcing parts and restoring the vehicle to transform it into an AMG-style car. The body kit was installed in January 2021 and the car received a minor respray at this time. The Borbet wheels have also been professionally refurbished. The car has been regularly maintained by independent Mercedes-Benz specialists, with the most recent work completed by Straight Eight Garage in Gardenvale, VIC in August 2021.

Exterior condition of this W124 shows in very good shape considering the car’s age and mileage. Paintwork shows in good condition overall with next to no signs of marking or scratching seen on the bodywork. The passenger-side C-pillar shows some paint fade and would require repainting in due course, while there is also some scraping on the underside of the front bumper. All four wheels show in polished condition with no curb rash after being restored, and the Kumho tyres retain a good level of tread depth.

The cabin shows in clean order throughout with blue leather upholstery in fine condition. There are almost no stress marks on the seats and the dash and door cards display in undamaged condition. This car specifies woodgrain trim highlighting which appears in decent order throughout. Some cracks in the piping of the centre armrest and a crack the passenger vanity mirror is observed. A notable addition to the interior includes the Aitwe steering wheel.

All accompanying documentation and receipts will be supplied with the car, as will an original tool kit and some stock items.
