THE AUCTION IS UNDER PROXY BIDDING
1987 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth
This 1987 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16V Cosworth is a distinguished example of a Mercedes-Benz icon, having made its way to Australia after being delivered to the United Kingdom. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine which sends 136kW/236Nm to the rear wheels. This powertrain is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer currently displays 114,656 miles.
Through the 1980s the Group B era was booming and Mercedes-Benz wanted a piece of the action. It was decided that the brand would replace ageing R107 SL-Class models it was already using with the newer W201 190E platform, with engineering firm Cosworth’s help. But it wasn’t long before the dominant Audi Quattro came on scene and wiped the floor with the series, forcing Mercedes’ hand into entering the 190E into the Deutsche Touring Masters. Entries were required to have a homologation counterpart to the touring car, creating the necessity for the 2.3-16V which brought more power, a sportier chassis, subtle body enhancements, and defined performance parts such as a limited slip differential. The 190E Cosworth is a desirable W201 variant today and is becoming increasingly difficult to find on the open market.
This example is painted in Arctic White and features a black leather-upholstered interior. Highlights of the exterior include black trim elements, while the interior features woodgrain inserts. It features original Cosworth parts including the three-gauge centre console cluster, Cosworth instrument panel, Cosworth steering wheel, and a full Cosworth body kit. A Kenwood head unit replaces the original radio. The car rides on a set of refurbished 15-inch ‘Gullideckel’ alloy wheels which come wrapped in Bridgestone Ecopia tyres. The original self-levelling suspension has been replaced with H&R springs with Bilstein shocks.
Originally delivered new to the UK, this 190E was imported to Queensland in 2004. It has since passed through the hands of a Mercedes-Benz collector before being purchased by the current owner. It was purchased without service history but was maintained in QLD by the previous owner. Servicing in Victoria has been completed by Lempher’s Mercedes-Benz Specialists, and it has recently undergone a major service which included a new water pump, coolant sensor replacement, machined brake rotors, adjusted idle, new Delkor battery, refurbished rear brakes, new fuel pump, and a reconditioned starter motor. The fuel injection system has been serviced by Ken Airs, North Melbourne. Items needing maintenance include the non-functioning air conditioning, worn steering bushes, a jerky transmission, and a discoloured lap-timer display.
Exterior-wise this car’s body presents well thanks to an Arctic White respray. There is some light fading, scratching, and minor cracking to various black trims externally, though some rust is also seen on the grille, inside rear-left door, outside rear-left door panel (under Sacco plank), and underneath the car. The engine bay could use a thorough detail. The tow hook, and jack point, covers are missing. The wheels show without kerb damage and tyres retain good tread.
Interior condition displays nicely for the car’s age. Black leather upholstery shows in decent order with some wear marks. The left-rear seat shows some frayed stitching, and the rear-right seat appears discoloured. The steering wheel has some damage to it, as does the woodgrain trim. Dashboard trim and door cards all appear without major wear, while the carpeting is clean. All gauges operate as intended, though the electric windows don’t currently function. Sale includes receipts of recent work.
