1986 Mercedes-Benz (W126) 560SEC
This 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC (W126) is a recently restored example which is highlighted by a striking colour combination and AMG accessories. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.6-litre V8 engine which sends 221kW (296hp) to the rear wheels. A four-speed automatic transmission comes mated to this driveline. The car’s odometer currently shows 162,377km.
The Mercedes-Benz W126 range of vehicles made their debut in 1981 as the flagship offering from the German marque. This generation also included the arrival of a two-door coupe body style which was designated as the C126. It brought the Mercedes top-quality reputation derived from its luxurious limousines to a new grand touring shape, which is now described as a quintessential Mercedes-Benz coupe. It was 1986 when Mercedes first unveiled the V8-powered flagship variation in the 560SEC. This range-topper included a large 5.6-litre engine, re-engineered running gear to cope with increased power, and various trim enhancements befitting of a top-spec vehicle. The 560SEC variant is particularly difficult to come by today, especially in clean restored condition like this example exhibits.
This car is finished in Signal Red on the outside, and is contrasted inside with cream leather upholstery. Elements of the exterior are adorned by chrome trimwork, but this car most notably features a period correct AMG body kit painted in body colour. It also features a sunroof from factory. No obvious aftermarket modifications are made to this car’s original specification. It rides on a set of 17-inch AMG alloy wheels which come wrapped in Roadclaw tyres.
Manufactured in Germany in January 1986, this car made its way to Australia to be complied in March 1986 and was delivered new through a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Milperra, NSW. The current owner purchased the vehicle 18 months ago from a deceased estate in Melbourne, where it was discovered in “barn find” condition. The car was then sent to Bundy Classic Car Restorations in VIC for a full work-over, with works amounting to approximately $20,000.
The exterior presentation of this 560SEC now shows very well for a car of its age and mileage. The red paintwork shows in bright condition with no overt marks or scratches seen. Some minor swirl marks could be rectified with a thorough detail and chrome polish. Some minor cracks and scratches show in places such as the passenger-side edge of the front bumper near the wheel guard. Small marks of damage are seen on the edge of the mirrors and on the rear spoiler lip. The wheels show some tarnishing and curb rash, though the tyres retain a good amount of tread.
Interior-wise the car shows in great condition for its age. The cream upholstery shows in clean order and no obvious signs of deformation are seen. Minor marks of scuffing are seen on the seat bolsters and on some points of the carpet. Some wear is seen on the black plastics of the stalks, while cracking is seen in the woodgrain trim elements. The car retains its original Becker radio.
